The Republicans Are Not Done With Trying To Ban Abortion

The Republicans whined about abortion for five decades. Then they got enough Supreme Court justices (thanks to Trump) to overturn Roe vs Wade. That turned out to have been a political mistake.

The idea they had promoted was that abortion should be up to the individual states, and as soon as Roe vs. Wade was overturned the red states began to outlaw it. But they did not get the public reaction they had hoped for. The GOP has been losing elections since. It seems the public did not like the banning.

It has been enough of a backlash that most Republicans won't even discusss abortion in public anymore. They are hoping that bad-mouthing the economy (even though it's doing well) and immigration (even though they are the ones that killed a bill to fix that) will take them to victory in November -- and that the public has forgotten about abortion.

But it would be a mistake to put the abortion issue on the back burner. Letting the states decide on abortion was only the first step in the abortion debate for Republicans. Their true agenda is to ban abortion in all 50 states, and while they don't want to talk about it right now they have not abandoned that plan.

If they are able to seize control of the White House and both houses of Congress, you can bet they will attempt to impose a 50 state ban on abortions. We must make sure abortion remains a hot issue in the coming election, even in the states where it is currently legal.
