Yesterday, I pulled into a gas station here in Amarillo and received a shock. They wanted $3.25 per gallon for their cheapest grade of gas. That was a jump of about 18 cents a gallon over last week's price.
I could probably take it a little better if part of the rise was a gas tax that would help to build and repair our road system and avoid the building of toll roads. But that is not the case. All of this ridiculous increase is going into the pocket of big oil.
Of course, the big oil companies are whining that there is a shortage of refining capacity, and they have to raise the prices because of increased demand. I don't believe it. If there is a shortage of refining capacity, it is because they have taken some plant offline for "repairs", just in time for the summer driving season.
It would be a lot easier to believe them if they didn't keep recording record windfall profits. Just watch, at the end of the summer they will once again announce record profits.
I'm thinking that maybe it's time to consider price controls for gasoline.
