At the risk of blowing my cover, here's something I wrote at mikehuckabee.com earlier today (with one small revision):
I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop at Tuesday's debate. Since Fred's gaffe last Wednesday in his Radio Iowa interview [his "Soviet Union" comment], his handlers have pulled him from all fundraising activities to prep him for his first debate.
A mistake like that on Tuesday could prove as disastrous as Gerald Ford's some 31 years ago in his debate against Jimmy Carter ("I don't believe that the Romanians consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. I don't believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union.").
It's a little too late in the game for Fred to claim that he hasn't studied that issue yet or, as he recently said about the Terri Schiavo case, "That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it." Back in history? That happened two years ago! No one can cram that much for the big exam on October 9, no matter how good his handlers are.
Fred might be able to dodge the bullet this time if the MSNBC panel throws him softballs, but I have a feeling that by Wednesday morning, a lot of people that were looking to Fred Thompson as the viable conservative candidate will be taking a much closer look at MIke Huckabee.
