Asking Santa

  1. Uhm, the Japanese automakers do have unions in their home markets, and Toyota's NUMI plant here in Fremont *is* unionized. And one thing the Japanese automakers do have is a heavily subsidized home market -- the Japanese government pays for their retirement plans, pays for their medical care, and keeps competitors out of the market.

    So if the U.S. automakers were to have what the Japanese automakers have:

    1. The government would assume all health care and retirement costs for the U.S. automakers.
    2. The government would outlaw non-US automakers within the boundaries of the US via various laws that would make it impossible for any non-US automaker to profitably export cars to here.
    3. The government would pay all job training costs
    4. The government would provide massive tax breaks for investing in new capital equipment and creating new jobs.

    That's what the Japanese do for their automakers. So do we do these for our own outomakers? Or do we give'em cash? Hmm...
