I thought the Republican Party was already scraping the bottom of the barrel in the candidates they want to send back to Washington (or send there for the first time). I looked at Republicans like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Steve King, David Vitter, Jim DeMint, Rand Paul (and his father Ron Paul), John Cornyn, and others and thought it just couldn't get any worse. I was wrong. They are now digging under that barrel.
A few days ago a teabagger supported candidate won the Nevada Republican primary as candidate for the United States Senate seat of Majority Leader Harry Reid. I had once thought that Reid had little chance of being re-elected come November, but it looks like the Republicans wanted to give him a fighting chance -- maybe even a good chance. Because the candidate they chose, Sharron Angle, makes other right-wing extremist Republicans look downright liberal by comparison.
Angle is not just a Republican or a teabagger. She is much worse than that. She is a John Bircher -- a group popular in the 50s and 60s that are so far to the right that they even embarrass other right-wing extremists. And it takes a lot to embarrass a right-winger.
It is still five months until the elections and some Nevada Republicans are already jumping ship. The Republican mayor of Reno has now decided he will support the re-election of Senator Reid -- amazing in a race Republicans thought they had sewn up just a few weeks ago. Mayor Bob Cashell said Angle is "just too far to the right for me. With the wild ideas she has going back to Washington, our state would suffer and we would never get anything done."
Some of you might be thinking that Cashell is just a member of that dying and nearly extinct breed -- a moderate Republican. Not true. Just look at some of the lunatic ideas that Sharron Angle wants to see done in this country:
* She wants to abolish Social Security.
* She wants to abolish the Department of Education.
* She wants to abolish the Internal Revenue Service.
* She wants to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency.
* She wants to get the U.S. out of the United Nations.
* She wants to re-institute the prohibition of alcohol.
* She thinks global warming is a myth.
* She wants to make it illegal for more than one parent to work outside the home.
* She advocates saunas and massages for criminals in Nevada prisons.
* She believes police and the military have the right to refuse any order they decide is unconstitutional.
* She thinks Big Oil should be deregulated.
* She thinks putting fluoride in drinking water is a communist plot.
* She thinks doctors should be required to tell women there is a link between abortion and breast cancer.
* She thinks the federal government should define marriage as only being between a man and a woman.
* She thinks the federal government wants to turn large cities into "giant concentration camps".
This woman is clearly a nut -- even too nutty for a lot of Republicans. As fellow blogger Jack Cluth said, this candidate is "wading in the shallow end of the gene pool."
If you want to go lower-check out your party candidate for Senator in SC-mr. Alvin Greene.Well done Democrats
ReplyDeleteI think it's pretty obvious to all by now, after Mr. Greene's "deer in the headlights" t.v. interviews, that the man has some mental problems and is being cruelly used by others in an attempt to screw up the senatorial race. Ms. Angle, however, seems to have full use of her faculties, such as they are.
ReplyDeleteAnd, fluoride a Communist plot? That was debunked many years before I was in dental hygiene school in the 70's!
