About 10 days after the Iowa straw poll, which was won by Bachmann and Paul, pollsters We Ask America decided the situation had changed so much (Pawlenty is out and Perry is in) that someone should check again with Iowa Republicans. They also doubted the outcome of the straw poll since it was a pay-to-play kind of thing (which could have discouraged some Republicans from participating).
So on August 16th they asked 649 Iowa Republicans about their preferences (margin of error is 3.85). And just as an interesting sidelight they also asked them who they did not want to see become their nominee. Here is what they discovered:
Candidate Iowa Republicans DON'T Want
Sarah Palin...............25%
Newt Gingrich...............16%
Jon Huntsman...............14%
Michele Bachmann..............12%
Ron Paul...............12%
Herman Cain...............8%
Mitt Romney...............7%
Rick Santorum...............3%
Rick Perry...............3%
That has to be a dagger through the heart of Sarah Palin. More people would not like her as the nominee than don't want Newt Gingrich -- and his hopes for the nomination died a month ago. It's also interesting that both Bachmann and Paul had a higher negative than either Romney or Perry.
Candidate Iowa Republicans WOULD Want
Rick Perry...............29%
Michele Bachmann...............17%
Mitt Romney...............15%
Ron Paul...............8%
Sarah Palin...............7%
Herman Cain...............5%
Newt Gingrich...............5%
Rick Santorum...............4%
Jon Huntsman...............1%
If this poll is anywhere near accurate, then it looks like things have changed in Iowa.
