Much has been made of what kind of holiday greeting people use -- especially by the talking heads at Fox News. They would have us believe that anyone who says "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas" is a part of some kind of conspiracy to engage in a war on christmas. Of course, it's a silly idea. All three greetings are nothing more than well wishes being offered to someone, and all should be accepted as such and appreciated. There is no war on christmas, and being insulted because someone wished you a happy holiday or season's greetings is just being petty and small-minded.
In the spirit of the season, I offer you the following information from the
Pew Research Center. They surveyed Americans and found their preferences in holiday greetings. Not surprisingly, it seems that Republicans (the group most likely to watch Fox News) prefer the term "Merry Christmas", while Democrats and adults in general have no preference (and are satisfied with whatever greeting they are given).
Hey, it's a friendly greeting at this time of year. Who cares? I'm agnostic and my feeling is that it is just a bunch of words that have different meanings to everyone. To me, it's like saying hello or good-bye. So Merry/Happy/Christmas/Holidays. Be safe if you travel.
