Americans Are Not Ready For Another Bush Presidency

Establishment Republicans (i.e., Wall Street) have gotten excited recently about Jeb Bush making noises like he might run for the GOP nomination in 2016. These guys are scared to death that their party will nominate an extreme right-wing teabagger as their candidate (Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, etc.) -- a candidate that will insure a Democratic victory in 2016. They want a pro-corporate candidate without too much baggage, and now that Christie has shot himself in the foot, the only almost moderate left is Jeb Bush.

But a new poll shows those Wall Street Republicans are going to have to open their wallets very wide if they want Bush. Americans are tired of Bush presidencies. Note in the chart above that every single group queried has significantly more people saying they don't want Bush to run than those who do want him to run -- and that cuts across all age, racial, regional, income, gender, and party lines. Even the Republican base would prefer Bush not run (by a 9 point margin).

There's still a lot of time before the race starts in earnest, and this does not mean Bush cannot win. But it does mean that Bush and his supporters have a LOT of work to do to make him a viable candidate. Right now, Americans just don't want another Bush in the White House.

This YouGov Poll was taken between April 12th and 14th of a nationwide sample of 1,000 adults, and has a margin of error of 4.2 points.
