Current Generic Ballot Favors Democrats In Presidential Race

It's still more than a year until the 2016 presidential election, and things could certainly change. But I found this new survey by the YouGov Poll interesting. It shows that the national is leaning toward voting another Democrat into the White House -- at least right now on a generic ballot (without specific candidates being known).

Neither party has a majority, but we have elected presidents with only a plurality before -- and the Democrats currently hold a 9 point edge. Also interesting is that only one demographic group show significant majority support for the Republicans -- those 65 & over. Whites give the Republicans a 4 point lead, but that's within the poll's margin of error (meaning they are pretty much split between the two parties. But Blacks, Hispanics, and other races all show significant support for Democrats.

Also interesting is that while men are evenly split (40% to 40%), Democrats have an 18 point advantage among women -- and since women vote in larger numbers (and percentages) than men do, that is going to be a problem for the Republicans.

This YouGov Poll was done between May 2nd and 4th of a random national sample of 1,000 adults, and has a margin of error of about 4 points.
