"Trickle-Down" Economics Started As A Joke - And It Still Is

The Republicans have been conning the American people with their economic policy for a long time now.

The policy is commonly called "Trickle-Down" economic theory. It says that the way to a better economy for everyone is to give more to the rich. They say when the rich get more the money trickles down to everyone else.

This is a failed economic theory, and always has been. Nothing trickles down. The bank accounts of the rich just get fatter -- and the rest of America is left to suffer. Americans simply cannot feast on the table scraps left by the rich.

Now the International Monetary Fund (IMF) tells us what most of us already knew -- that trickle-down economic theory does not work. It actually has a negative effect on economic growth, while giving more to the poor and working classes has a positive effect.

Here is an excellent discussion on the failure of trickle-down policy by Jared Keller at the Pacific Standard website:

"Trickle-down" economics began as a joke. Seriously.
If there’s one person most often associated with the origins of of trickle-down economics, it’s President Ronald Reagan. Few people know, however, that the phrase was actually coined by American humorist Will Rogers, who mocked President Herbert Hoover’s Depression-era recovery efforts, saying that "money was all appropriated for the top in the hopes it would trickle down to the needy."
Rogers’ joke became economic dogma within two generations, thanks in large part to Reagan. At the center of Reagan’s economic doctrine was the idea that economic gains primarily benefiting the wealthy—investors, businesses, entrepreneurs, and the like—will "trickle-down" to poorer members of society, creating new opportunities for the economically disadvantaged to attain a better standard of living. Prosperity for the rich leads to prosperity for all, the logic goes, so let’s hurry up with those tax cuts already. The legacy of Reaganomics continues to shape modern debates over macroeconomic policy in the United States, from the Bush tax cuts of the mid-2000s to the deficit hawks waging war over the federal budget in Congress.
Now, nearly 80 years later, Rogers’ quip is getting the punchline it deserves: A devastating new report from the International Monetary Fund has declared the idea of "trickle-down" economics to be as much a joke as he'd imagined.
The IMF report, authored by five economists, presents a scathing rejection of the trickle-down approach, arguing that the monetary philosophy has been used as a justification for growing income inequality over the past several decades. "Income distribution matters for growth," they write. "Specifically, if the income share of the top 20 percent increases, then GDP growth actually declined over the medium term, suggesting that the benefits do not trickle down."
This should shock no one: Observers of income inequality over the past five years (especially those fond of Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century) will recognize this trend from economic data going back to the end of World War II. Consider this much-cited chart by Pavlina R. Tcherneva, of the Levy Economics Institute, tracking the distribution of income gains during periods of economic expansion:

According to Tcherneva's analysis, the balance in the distribution is flipped from the majority of the nation to the top 10 percent during the Reagan and Bush administrations, a rapid acceleration of a gradual trend. Income inequality was already growing in the U.S., but the advent of Reaganomics kicked the trend into overdrive.
Or consider this chart from the Economic Policy Institute, which shows that, in general, the top one percent of society derives an increasing portion of income gains from existing capital and wealth:

One last chart, this one from the Economist, based on data from Emmanuel Saez of the University of California-Berkeley and Gabriel Zucman of the London School of Economics, shows how wealth has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of the super-rich:

According to the IMF, countries looking to boost economic growth should concentrate their efforts on the lower segments of society rather than bolstering so-called "job creators" with tax breaks. The study results suggest that raising incomes for the poor and middle class yields measurable improvements to the national economy: Increasing the income share to the bottom 20 percent of citizens by a mere one percent results in a 0.38 percentage point jump in GDP growth. By contrast, increasing the income share of the top 20 percent of citizens yields a decline in GDP growth by 0.08 percentage points.
It’s not just the IMF making the case against trickle-down economics: As Quartz notes, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development recently published a strong case for fighting income inequality, asserting that economic growth "is most damaged by the effects of inequality on the bottom 40% of incomes," Quartz's Gabriel Fisher writes.
The message of the IMF report is clear: Income and wealth inequality isn’t a class problem, but a national issue. "Widening income inequality is the defining challenge of our time," the authors of the report write. "The poor and the middle class matter the most for growth via a number of interrelated economic, social, and political channels." While disciples of Reaganomics may be clenching their fists, Will Rogers is probably laughing from the grave.

Trump Holds Record For Being The Most Joked About

The Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University counted up all the jokes told about politicians each year on late night talk shows. In 2017, the number of jokes told about politicians was 6,337. About half of those were about Donald Trump.

About 3,128 jokes were made about Trump in 2017. That beats the old record of 1,816 -- also held by Trump (in 2016). Until Trump came along, the record had been held by Bill Clinton (1,717 jokes in 1998).

Trump "Speaks Loudly And Carries A Small Stick"

(This photo of Trump and Pena Nieto at mcclatchydc.com is by Evan Vucci /AP.)

Diplomats around the world are starting to laugh at the diplomatic incompetence of Donald Trump. Consider this from the D.C. Bureau of McClatchy News (part of which is posted below):

When Jorge Guajardo, one of Mexico’s most senior and seasoned foreign policy hands, got out of bed Thursday morning, a couple of interesting messages were waiting on his cell phone.
One was a link shared by a U.S. diplomat to the leaked transcript of a phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. In the second, a former Mexican official offered the quick analysis.
“He’s the opposite of Teddy Roosevelt,” that official quipped to Guajardo about Trump. “He speaks loudly and carries a small stick.”
Seven months into the Trump administration, the world’s diplomatic community has gone from throwing its hands in the air to now leaning back in their chairs and laughing, albeit morosely, at Trump’s cringe-worthy display of diplomacy during the infancy of his presidency.
A transcript of Trump’s conversation with Mexico’s leader was one of two phone calls uncovered by the Washington Post that provide yet another glimpse into the raw conversations that have opened Trump up to charges of hypocrisy and belittling his base.
A transcript of Trump’s conversation with Mexico’s leader was one of two phone calls uncovered by the Washington Post that provide yet another glimpse into the raw conversations that have opened Trump up to charges of hypocrisy and belittling his base. . . .
The dramatic exchange brings new insight to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s uncomfortable body language when speaking with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron long handshake with the U.S. president. These awkward moments are funny; indeed diplomats laugh privately at these displays. But it only serves to mask the serious concerns pulsing through the international community about the direction and priorities of the new administration.

The Biggest Joke In The Administration (Outside Of Trump)

(This caricature of Kellyanne Conway is by DonkeyHotey.)

Kellyanne Conway is not the worst person or the most dangerous person in the Trump administration. She doesn't have enough power to hold either of those titles (and Bannon has them locked down anyway). But she does have to be the biggest joke in the administration.

This woman is not afraid to look stupid, and she does it often. She regularly tells the most outrageous and obvious lies, and she does it with a straight face. If the Trump administration does something dumb (which seems like it will be a regular thing), you can count on Kellyanne Conway to worm her way on as many news shows as possible to lie about how that dumb thing was actually a brilliant move by Trump. She does this in an effort to make herself look good to Trump.

But the media has finally figured her out. Some, like Mika Brzezinski of Morning Joe on MSNBC, has declared that Conway will no longer appear on that show. She says, “She’s not credible anymore.”

And she's not the only journalist to reach that conclusion. An anchor on a different network (who wanted to remain anonymous) said Conway is no longer invited to appear because “she constantly obfuscates and misrepresents the truth.”

Other journalists, like Jake Tapper of CNN and Matt Later of NBC, seem to relish interviewing Conway these days -- because they know she will lie, and they can attack those lies (making themselves look good in the process).

I think Conway is just trying to be a "good soldier" for the administration by showing her loyalty to Trump. But the constant barrage of lies she tells to do that has just destroyed her credibility, and it's made her little more than a joke.

New NCAA "Play-Off" System Fails In Its First Year

For years now, college football fans have been complaining that the "championship" is nothing more than a popularity contest, with the two teams deemed by the powers that be playing for the title -- and everyone else being left out in the cold (regardless of how good they were, or whether they had a good chance of beating the two popular teams chosen).

Anyone with half a brain knew this wasn't a real championship -- but a farce. And that farce had become so ridiculous that a "play-off" system was created (sort of). They decided that they would put the top four teams in the popularity contest into a play-off instead of just the top two teams.

The thinking was that the top four teams would be significantly better than the teams rated fifth and below -- and that would justify calling the winner of that four team play-off a "champion". But that didn't happen. There were at least six teams that would have a good chance to survive a play-off and become champion -- with TCU and Baylor being as good, in my opinion, as Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State. I think any unbiased observer would have to admit that.

That means the new "play-off" system for college football is a FAILURE in its inaugural year. A real play-off is one that settles the arguments over who is best by pitting those teams against each other -- and forcing the real champion to earn that championship on the field, and not in some kind of rigged popularity contest. This did not happen. They will always be those who will argue that TCU or Baylor could have won the championship if given the chance (since their record was just as good as three of the top four teams and they played in a strong conference).

Why doesn't the NCAA Division I football schools have a real play-off system? I know all the arguments against a real play-off, but they are all false arguments. Both the NAIA and the NCAA Division II teams have a real play-off, and it works well for both -- giving them a real champion who won their title on the field. And if it works for them, it could work for the Division I schools also.

But there is too much bowl money for the biggest schools, and those bowls are all afraid they would be relegated to first or second round games (or eliminated), so they spend a bundle opposing a real play-off -- and the big schools, who make a ton of money playing in those bowl games, are afraid they wouldn't make as much money in a real play-off system (and couldn't survive such a system).

So we are left with just another popularity contest, with four teams instead of two. And that won't change because the NCAA has made the three most politically powerful conferences (SEC, Big 10, PAC 10) happy by picking one of their teams (and they'll probably continue to do that). Meanwhile, the conferences without political power (even strong ones like the Big 12) are left out in the cold. It's a shameful system, and every champion crowned under this system should have an asterisk placed beside their name (because they didn't really earn the title against all the best teams).

Iran Reports Onion Satire As True

The FARS News Agency in Iran reported the above story as true -- that Iranian President Ahmadinejad was more popular than President Obama among rural White Americans. Although they reported the story as though it was their own (note the attribution above), it was taken, word-for word, from the Onion. It makes one wonder, are they intentionally lying, or do they not understand that the Onion is satire (and nothing in it should be taken literally or seriously)? This is definitely an EPIC FAIL!

Time For A Joke

I admit it. I shamelessly stole this joke from the great Juanita Jean (owner of the world's most dangerous beauty salon). But it was just too good not to pass on. Here it is:

A man walked into a very high-tech bar. As he sat down on a stool he noticed that the bartender was a robot. The robot clicked to attention and asked, “Sir, what will you have?”
The man thought a moment then replied “A martini please.”
The robot clicked a couple of times and mixed the best martini the man had ever had.
The robot then asked, “Sir, what is your IQ?” The man answered “Oh, about 174.”
The robot then proceeded to discuss the theory of relativity, inter-stellar space travel, the latest medical breakthroughs, etc…
The man was most impressed. He left the bar but thought he would try a different tack. He returned and took a seat. Again the robot clicked and asked what would he have? “A martini please.”
Again it was superb. The robot again asked “What is your IQ sir?”
This time the man answered, “Oh, about 120″. So the robot started discussing NASCAR racing, the latest basketball scores, and what to expect the Dodgers to do this week end.
The guy had to try it one more time. So he left, returned and took a stool…. Again a martini, and the question, “What is your IQ?” This time the man drawled out ” Uh…… bout 50″.
The robot clicked then leaned close and very slowly asked,
“A-r-e…
y-o-u-r…
p-e-o-p-l-e…
r-e-a-l-l-y
g-o-i-n-g…
t-o…
n-o-m-i-n-a-t-e….
R-i-c-k…P-e-r-r-y?”

Legalizing Gay Marriage Would . . .

I shamelessly stole this post from the excellent blog Thurman's Notebook, but it was just too funny not to pass on. He called it "Ten Reasons Why Gay Marriage Must Never Be Legal". Enjoy.

1 – Homosexuality is unnatural and Americans always reject unnatural things such as polyester, breast implants, automobiles, and air conditioning.
2 – Legal gay marriage would encourage people to be gay, the same way that associating with tall people will make you tall or being around blue-eyed people will change your eye color .
3 – Gay marriage is a gateway to all kinds of other “deviant” behavior. If gay marriage is legalized some people might even try to marry other species since dogs, cats, sheep, and other animals all have the ability to sign a marriage contract.
4 – The institution of marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all like many of the principles on which this great nation was founded. Women are still the property of their husbands, black people still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
5 – Marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage is allowed; the sanctity of marriages like Britney Spears’ 55-hour, just-for-fun marriage, or the serial marriages of Newt ‘Always Looking For An Upgrade’ Gingrich would be utterly destroyed.
6 – Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay people, infertile couples, and very old people should not be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children. (This argument can also be applied to the abortion issue.)
7 – Gay parents will raise gay children, since heterosexual parents always produce straight children.
8 – Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire nation. That’s why we have only one religion in the United States.
9 – Children can never succeed without both a male and a female role model at home. That’s why single parents are expressly forbidden to raise children in this country.
10 – Gay marriage will undermine the very foundation of our society. Americans, and human beings in general are incapable of adapting to new social norms. We haven’t adapted to cars, the service economy, cable television, or global computer networks.

A Joke

QUESTION:

What is the difference between a teabagger and a black hole?

ANSWER:

One is incredibly dense and sucks all of the light and energy from collapsing stars and other things around them, and the other is an astronomical phenomenon.

The Wish

One of the funniest (and most perceptive) bloggers in the Lone Star State is the inimitable Juanita Jean (owner of the world's most dangerous beauty salon, inc.). She is always worth reading, but every now and then she comes up with a gem that's just too good not to pass on. This little joke is one of those:

I met a fairy today, who said she would grant me one wish.
“I want to live forever,” I said.
“Sorry,” said the fairy, “I’m not allowed to grant wishes like that.”
“Fine,” I said, “then I want to die after the Texas Legislature gets their heads out of their butts.”
“Oh, you crafty witch,” said the fairy.

A Little Humor

I'm sure you are familiar with the chart above.   It's the old terror alert chart instituted by the Bush administration.   I don't know that it accomplished anything other than to scare some people, but it received a lot of publicity.

Over at the excellent blog called ratboy's anvil 2, there is a humorous post that plays off the terror alert chart.   I thought it was hilarious, so I've reposted it and I hope you find it funny.   It's what the terror alert chart would be like in some other countries.   Here it is:

Our Allies and Their Terror Alerts
by John C
1.) The British are feeling the pinch of recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The British have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

2.) The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

3.) The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

4.) Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

5.) The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

6.) Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

7.) The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

8.) Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!", "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend", and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

And to my friends outside the U.S., remember it's just a joke (that I hope you find funny).

A Joke To Lighten The Mood

I'm sure no one got everything they wanted out of the election yesterday.   That is just the normal thing for elections.   So to put everyone in a better mood I thought a good joke would be in order.   I found this one over at the blog of One Pissed Off Veteran -- an excellent "Left Coast" blog that I read often.   It was just too funny not to pass it along.   The joke:

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.

He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally....I assumed you had stolen the car."

This Is Not Funny !

After all the trouble Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers put you through at an airport, how would you feel if they then made you the butt of a prank or joke? That's just what happened to a student at the Philadelphia airport.

Rebecca Solomon is a 22 year-old student who was returning to the University of Michigan on January 5th. As her bags were being screened at the airport, a TSA worker suddenly pulled a plastic bag of white powder out of the case holding her laptop computer. He demanded to know where she had gotten it.

The girl was horrified. Had a terrorist slipped some kind of explosive into her luggage? Had a smuggler slipped some drugs into her bags? She stammered for an explanation she did not have. Solomon later wrote in her student newspaper, "He let me stutter through an explanation for the longest minute of my life. Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with him to understand that I'd never seen this baggie before."

Then the TSA worker smiled and said it was his. Solomon said he "waved the baggie at me and told me he was kidding, that I should've seen the look on my face. I had been terrified and disrespected by an airport employee. He'd joked about the least funny thing in air travel."

She's right. If she had been the one pulling the "prank", she would have been arrested and very possibly served significant jail time. But he thought it was really funny when he did it. Well, it wasn't funny. Ms. Solomon did the appropriate thing. She demanded to see a supervisor and filed an official complaint.

At least the TSA seems to have acted in an appropriate manner. TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis would not say whether the worker quit or was fired, but did say he no longer worked for the TSA. She went on to say, "TSA viewed this behavior to be completely inappropriate and unprofessional. The employee was immediately disciplined by TSA management at the Philadelphia airport."

That was the least they could do.

Is An Execution A Place For Jokes ?

Is an execution the place for telling jokes? Patrick Knight believes that it is. Knight is scheduled to be executed on June 26th for the killing of his Randall county neighbors, Walter and Mary Werner, about 16 years ago. Now he says he wants his last words to be a joke.

Knight is asking for jokes to be mailed to him, and says he'll tell the best one just before he is executed. But Randall County Sheriff Joel Richardson, who investigated the murders, is not happy with Knight's decision to tell a joke in the death chamber. He said, "The whole thing is not a joke to anybody here unless it is to him. This tells you a little bit about the guy's character, anyway."

But Knight, who says about 250 jokes have been sent in so far, said, "I'm not trying to disrespect the Werners or anything like that. I'm not trying to say I don't care what's going on. I'm about to die. I'm not going to sit here and whine and cry and moan and everything like that when I'm facing the punishment I've been given. I'm not asking for money. I'm not asking for penpals or anything like that. All that I'm asking for is jokes."

Knight went on to say, "I know I'm not innocent. They think they're killing me. They think they're punishing me. They've already punished me. I've already had 16 years of punishment. They're releasing me. They're letting me go. That's helping me out. That's the way I look at it."

Knight said he got the idea of telling a joke at his execution from fellow inmate, Vincent Gutierrez, who remarked as he was strapped to the gurney, "Where's a stunt double when you need one?"

There have already been 14 executions in Texas this year. In addition to Knight, there are four more scheduled for June (including one female). So far, there are ten more scheduled this year after this month.

Most of us would not think it appropriate to tell jokes in the death chamber, but it is not our execution. Personally, I would prefer that Texas not engage itself in legalized killing. But if we must do it, then it is only decent to let the condemned say whatever they want as their last words.

Patrick Knight has chosen to use his last statement to tell a joke. That is his right.
