Panhandle Dem Drops Out Of Race

Things were looking good for Panhandle Democrats for a while. They finally had a credible candidate to run against Republican Rep. John Smithee (pictured above). Amarillo attorney James Wood had tossed his hat in the ring, and area Democrats had high hopes for the November election.

Those hopes were dashed a couple of days ago. Mr. Wood announced that he is withdrawing from the race. He said he is experiencing some health problems, and would not be able to continue his campaign.

I wish Mr. Wood the best of luck in dealing with his health problems, and I hope he has a full recovery. But this pretty much ensures that House District #86 will remain in Republican hands. Smithee does have a Libertarian opponent, but even here in the Panhandle Libertarians don't get many votes

Maybe we'll have better luck in 2010.
