Government Accused Of Hiding Evidence

It looks like the Bush administration is going to continue their illegal and unethical behavior right up to his last minute in office. With only two weeks left in Bush's term, the government is being accused by a federal judge of hiding evidence from the court.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan was supposed to rule this week on the release of a 38 year-old Yemeni doctor who has been held at Guantanamo Bay for six years. His attorneys said the doctor, Aymen Saeed Batarfi, was on a humanitarian aid mission in Afghanistan when he was wounded and captured by Northern Alliance forces, who then turned him over to Americans. However, the government says he was aiding al-Queda.

The judge says he can't make a decision yet because the government did not turn over necessary documents until recently, and he hasn't had time to review them. He has put off his decision until after a hearing on March 9th.

During yesterday's hearing Judge Sullivan said, "I think it's unfair, I think it's disingenuous. This government, especially, hides the ball when it suits this government's purpose."

Of course, he is right, but this is nothing new for the Bush administration. For the last eight years, they've turned the concept of a fair trial into little more than a sick joke. It's no wonder the world no longer looks to us as the beacon of justice.

Thank goodness this dark time in American history is nearly over.
