Breakaway Beats Peloton in Stage 12

The climbs in stage 12 of the Tour de France weren't super difficult, but there were enough of them to allow a breakaway of seven riders to survive and finish ahead of the peloton. The strongest of the seven riders in the breakaway turned out to be Danish rider Nicki Sorenson of Saxo Bank (pictured), who won the stage.

Frenchman Laurent Lefevre of Bouyges Telecom finished second, and Italian Franco Pellizotti of Liquigas finished in third place. None of the seven riders were in contention for race leader, so the standings remained pretty much as they were, especially for the top ten.

The first rider to cross the finish line in the peloton was Columbia's Mark Cavendish. He remains in the green jersey and picks up a few more points over Thor Hushovd of Cervelo.

Anything could happen in stage 13 since it has some pretty good climbs, but I doubt it will be a good stage for the sprinters. There are two catagorey 3 climbs, two catagorey 2 climbs and a catagorey 1 climb. If someone in the top 10-15 makes a move in the mountains, it could draw a reaction from the strongest riders and really shake up the overall standings. It should be a fun stage to watch.
