Yesterday, President Obama introduced his nominee for Surgeon General at a press conference in the Rose Garden. He has nominated Dr. Regina Benjamin, and I don't think he could have chosen anyone better.
According to CNN, "Benjamin received a bachelor's degree in 1979 from Xavier University of Louisiana, attended Morehouse School of Medicine from 1980 to 1982, and received a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1984. She completed her residency in family practice at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in 1987."
In 1990, Dr. Benjamin opened the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in a rural fishing village in Alabama. Since that time, she had dedicated her life to providing medical care for the poor. If a person can't pay they aren't charged, but no one goes without medical care.
Her clinic has been ravaged by hurricanes, and she rebuilt with her own funds. Shae has mortgaged her own home, maxed out her credit cards and done whatever was neccessary to keep the clinic going.
Dr. Benjamin wasn't President Obama's first nominee for the position -- TV personality Dr. Sanjay Gupta was the first. But I think she is the best choice by far.
