  3. Can you imagine what a horrible world it would be if most people thought like these nuts?

  4. Westboro Baptist Church!

    It's bad enough that they call themselves Christians, why do they have to pretend to be Baptists and give my denomination a bad name?

    The only decent thing they did was misspell Westboro, which is small consolation for the good people of Westborough, Massachusetts.

    I love the line "Because at the fountain of knowledge, you only gargled." It reminds me of a poem by Alexander Pope that was one of my father's favorites:

    A little learning is a dangerous thing.
    Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring;
    There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain;
    And drinking largely sobers us again.

  5. Me too. It's one of the best arguments I've ever read for being a life-long learner.

    One of my pet peeves is people who earn a college degree and then promptly stop learning, thinking that they're already "educated" so now they know it all. After two Master's degrees, I'm painfully aware of how little I know and how much more I have yet to learn.

    My father's sister only had an eighth grade education, but my father held her out as an example to my brother and me. "Meta can converse with Ph.D's," he used to say, "because she knows how to listen and learn."
