Congratulations are once again in order for the 1 O'Clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas (pictured). The band, composed entirely of college music students, has been nominated for a Grammy for it's album entitled Lab 2009. They have been nominated in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
The band's director, Steve Wiest, has also been nominated for a Grammy. He was nominated for his original composition on the same album called Ice-Nine. He said the piece was inspired by Kurt Vonnegut's novel Cat's Cradle. Mr. Wiest is an accomplished trombonist and arranger, who is a former member of the jazz bands of Maynard Ferguson and Doc Severinson.
Since the band was already scheduled for a California tour about the time of the Grammys to play at several jazz clubs and universities, UNT is paying the cost of tickets for the band to attend the Grammy Awards ($300 each). The current band and several former members who played on the 2009 album will get to attend the ceremony.
The band has been nominated for Grammy's in the past. Maybe this is their year to win. Congratulations and good luck go out to Steve Wiest and the UNT 1 O'Clock Lab Band.
