Public Won't Like This About Perry

Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, is supposed to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination today. And some Republicans, especilly among the teabaggers, are getting excited about it. They point out that Perry has never lost an election, like that automatically gives him a ticket to the Oval Office. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they find out about the real Rick Perry though.

Remember what happened when the congressional Republicans voted for the Ryan Plan that would abolish the Medicare Program? I don't know why, but the Republicans thought that would resonate among the American voters. They were wrong. It angered most Americans, and they were quick to show the Republicans their displeasure. The Republicans got so much negative feedback that they are still trying to back-pedal from that blunder.

Well, Rick Perry makes Paul Ryan look like a real moderate. Everybody knows about Perry's threat to pull Texas out of the Union, but that's minor up beside what he thinks about Medicare and Social Security. He says that both of those programs are unconstitutional and he would get rid of the federal version of both programs. He wants to give every state the right to institute Social Security and Medicare on its own (a virtual impossibility) or do away with both.

Frankly, I think Perry's run for the presidency is already over even before it's begun. Do the Republicans really want to run a person for president who says both Medicare and Social Security are unconstitutional "Ponzi schemes" that should be eliminated? Running someone with those beliefs could make John McCain look like a real vote-getter, and set the party up for disaster even down-ballot.

Add that to the fact that he would like to eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency, federal education standards, and the 17th Amendment (which allows for citizens to elect senators instead of a state legislature appointing them), and you have a candidate that would like to take America back to the 19th century.

I really don't think Americans will want this teabagging fool.

  1. We could take Perry's advice and pray for rain - to pour on his parade. I'm on bended knee already.
