6% Of Americans Would Vote For Roseanne

About 10 days ago I posted about a new candidate who had entered the presidential race. Comedian Roseanne Barr had announced she was running for president, and had filed the necessary paperwork with the Green Party to try and secure their nomination. At the time I said there was little doubt that Ms. Barr would receive a lot more coverage than other Green Party hopefuls by virtue of her celebrity status, but I wondered if she would be able to rein in her tendency to turn even serious events into something comedic and make the Green Party look foolish.

That question is still up in the air, but it looks like she may be able to muster more support than I thought. A recent survey shows she starts out with more support from the general public than most Green Party candidates are able to muster after a full campaign. In their newest survey of just how well President Obama is doing, the Public Policy Polling organization tossed Roseanne's name into the mix and she got about 6% support. Here is how she did against Obama and Romney and the demographic breakdown of Roseanne Barr's support:

President Obama...............47%
Mitt Romney...............42%
Roseanne Barr...............6%
Undecided...............5%

Demographic Breakdown
18 to 29...............19%
30 to 45...............6%
46 to 65...............4%
Over 65...............3%
Hispanic...............7%
White...............6%
African-American...............5%
Other race...............11%
Democrat...............6%
Republican...............5%
Independent...............8%
Women...............5%
Men...............8%
Liberal...............12%
Moderate...............8%
Conservative...............2%

When Gary Johnson's name is substituted for Ms. Barr's, he gets about 7% support. Johnson is running for the Libertarian Party nomination. The poll did not give respondents the choice of having both Johnson and Barr on the ballot. Here is how the president fared in head-to-head match-ups with the Republican hopefuls:

Obama...............49%
Santorum...............44%

Obama...............49%
Romney...............42%

Obama...............49%
Paul...............41%

Obama...............52%
Gingrich...............40%

This is the first time a PPP survey has shown Santorum doing better against the president than Romney.
