Obama Still Polling Better Than The GOP

The chart above was compiled from the newest ABC News/Washington Post Poll (conducted between March 7th and 10th of 1,001 random adults nationwide -- with a margin of error of 3.5%). The Washington Post headline said that Obama's popularity is falling. The truth is that the above chart shows his popularity is the same as it was on election day (50% to 46%). he did get a little bump in the poll after the election, which is now still gone, but the president still has solid approval numbers -- and they look even better when compared to Congress.

The Congress in general has some very bad approval numbers, with 16% approving and 80% disapproving of the job they are doing. And it doesn't get much better when you look at Congress broken down by party -- with the Democrats scoring 34% approval to 62% disapproval and the Republicans scoring only 24% approval to 72% disapproval. The American people are sick of the inaction in Congress and the failure of both parties inability to work together to solve the country's problems.

The people are not happy about the sequester cuts imposed by Congress and allowed to take effect either. About 64% think those across-the-board cuts will hurt the economy, and 60% think it will hurt the government's ability to deliver basic services. And who do they blame for those cuts? About 47% blame the Republicans in Congress, while 33% blame the president.

And the new budget proposed by the Republicans (the Ryan Plan) is not going to increase the popularity of the congressional GOP. It has no new revenue, and in fact would cut taxes again for the rich. It would cut Medicaid and Medicare and other programs. But the poll shows the people want a mixture of cuts and new revenue. About 58% would approve cutting the military in a more targeted way, 56% would increase taxes on the rich by limiting deductions, 71% oppose cutting Medicaid, and 60% oppose raising the age for Medicare.

In short, the Republicans in Congress are still badly out-of-step with what the American people want.
