Support For Same-Sex Marriage Is Still Growing

This chart was made from information in the 2014 General Social Survey (GSS), done by AP/NORC at the University of Chicago. The GSS survey is done every two years by interviewing 2,000-2,500 adults, and has a margin of error of about 2.2 points.

The GSS showed more support than opposition for same-sex marriage legalization for the first time in 2010. In 2012 that support had grown, and in 2014 it grew to its largest percentage so far -- about 56% of the general public. Support is particularly strong among young people (72%), Democrats (65%), and Whites (58%).

The Supreme Court will be hearing arguments on the constitutionality of same-sex marriages in April, and is expected to render a decision this summer. Many (including me) expect them to decide those marriages are protected by the Constitution. This GSS survey shows such a decision would probably be widely accepted by the American public.
