Gays/Lesbians Are More Popular Than Evangelicals

Republicans, acting on behalf of evangelical christians in their base, recently passed a law in Indiana that would have allowed both individuals and businesses to discriminate against members of the LGBT community. All they would have had to do is say that serving those gays/lesbians (and possibly even other groups) would violate their "sincerely held religious views".

There was a huge backlash among decent people across the country -- a backlash so large that those same legislators quickly amended the odious law to make it illegal to use the law to discriminate against anyone (especially in for-profit businesses). I think the evangelicals were shocked at the huge backlash. They had expected the LGBT community to complain, but figured the rest of the country would go along with their bigotry.

They were wrong. Americans are getting tired of the religious-right using the bible to justify their bigotry. And a new poll shows that. It seems that lesbians and gays (who were once so discriminated against that most of them couldn't reveal their sexual preference) are now more popular with the general public than the bigoted evangelicals.

Among the general public, gays/lesbians have an 11 point higher favorability rating than evangelicals do -- and the same is true about the unfavorability rating, where evangelicals have a 10 point higher rating than gays/lesbians do. Things are changing fast in this country, and religious bigotry is no longer a "value" appreciated by most.

These numbers are from a new Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research survey that was done between March 9th and 16th of a random national sample of 1,000 likely 2016 voters, with a margin of error of 3.1 points.
