Public Says Trump's Mental Fitness Needs Questioning

There's been a lot of discussion in the media recently about Donald Trump's mental fitness to be president. Some are saying he's not mentally fit, and that is endangering the nation. Others claim this is nothing more than politically motivated criticism from Trump opponents. Who is right? What does the American public think?

This poll asked Americans about it. It is the Axios / SurveyMonkey Poll -- done on January 10th and 11th of a random national sample of 1,412 adults, with a 3.5 point margin of error.

The results will disappoint Trump and his supporters. While Republicans overwhelmingly thought the question of his mental fitness was politically motivated (by a 60 point margin), the rest of the country disagrees. By a 14 point margin, the general public thought it was important to question Trump's mental fitness -- and that included Independents by an 11 point margin and Democrats by a 77 point margin.
