The Most Popular Winter Olympic Sports To Watch Are . . .

The Winter Olympics is starting, and to celebrate that the Economist / YouGov Poll asked respondents to name their favorite sports in the Winter Olympics. Respondents could choose up to three sports, and the results are shown by percentage in the chart above. The survey was done between February 4th and 6th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults, and has a 3.3 point margin of error.

That figure skating is the most popular sport for viewers was no surprise, but the next three most popular did surprise me. It seems that ski jumping (31%), bobsled (29%), and snowboard (24%) were all more popular than ice hockey (21%). Nordic combined (a combination of cross country skiing and ski jumping) was the least popular at 1%.

I did think it was odd that regular track speed skating was left off the list.
