GOP's Tax Reform Will Not Help Them In 2018 Election

The Republicans celebrated when they were able to push through their tax reform. They thought by labeling that reform as a "middle class tax cut", they would be able to ride it to victory in the 2018 election. But they didn't count on the American people seeing through their lies.

The truth was that the tax reform had nothing to do with helping the middle class. The rich and super-rich got over 80% of those tax cuts benefits, while hundreds of millions of American workers got nothing (or very close to nothing). The Republicans had just rewarded their true constituency (the rich), and showed again that they don't care about average hard-working Americans.

You may have noticed that Republican congressional candidates are NOT campaigning on their tax reform. They can read the polls, and they know that most voters understand the tax cut was not for them. In a new poll, only 19% of Americans think they will pay less thanks to the GOP reform. Meanwhile, a majority (52%) say they will pay the same or more in taxes. Those are not winning numbers -- and it's why the Republicans have been remarkably silent about the tax reform.

The chart represents the results of the latest Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between August 19th and 21st of a nationwide sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,247 registered voters). The margin of error for adults is 3 points, and for registered voters is 2.9 points.

NOTE -- The Republicans also said the huge tax cuts for corporations would result in massive job growth and much higher wages for workers. Neither of those things have happened. Instead, the corporations used most of the tax cuts to buy back their own stock -- which raised the stock prices and mainly benefitted the rich (who own most of that stock).
