Americans Overwhelmingly Oppose Cuts To Social Security

The chart above is from the Pew Research Center. It is from a survey done between December 11th and 23rd of 2018 of a national sample of 2,524 adults, with a margin of error of 2.5 points.

The Republicans in Congress have said they want to cut Social Security benefits. They want to do that to cover for the massive tax cuts they gave corporations and rich people, and would like for people to believe the ballooning deficit and national debt (now rising by a trillion dollars a year) is caused by Social Security (and Medicare and Medicaid). Donald Trump is joining them by submitting a budget proposal that makes cuts to Social Security (and Medicare and Medicaid).

This is a LIE! Social Security has never added a single penny to either the deficit or the national debt. It is paid for wholly by FICA taxes (payroll taxes), and has never run a deficit. The Republicans don't care. They opposed the creation of Social Security, and have been trying to eliminate it ever since. They know the program is now too popular to eliminate (because it works), so they are going to chip away at it until it doesn't work anymore -- and then eliminate it.

Fortunately, it looks like the American people do not support the GOP desire to cut Social Security. Only 25% want to see cuts to Social Security, while a massive 74% oppose any cuts to it. That's a 49 point gap opposing any cuts.

The Republicans can try to cut Social Security, but the Democratic House will block it -- and then the Republicans will pay for their attempt in the 2020 elections.
