Pete Buttigieg Seems To Be Impressing Iowa Democrats
When Mayor Buttigieg tossed his hat in the ring for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, I didn't think he had a chance. I may have been wrong about that. As he has made the rounds of news shows, he has sounded both reasonable and knowledgeable about the issues -- and some Democrats are starting to take notice.
A new poll shows this is true of Iowa Democratic caucus-goers. It shows that Joe Biden (25%) and Bernie Sanders (24%) are still leading in Iowa, but Pete Buttigieg has leapfrogged into third place with 11%. The only other candidate in double-digits is Kamala Harris at 10%. Elizabeth Warren (9%), Cory Booker (6%), and Beto O'Rourke (5%) round out the top seven. No other candidate could do better than 1% or 2%.
The chart above is from a new Emerson College Poll -- done between March 21st and 24th of 249 Democrats who are caucus-goers. The margin of error is 6.2 points.
Can Buttigieg maintain a strong showing in Iowa? Can he start to rise in the national polls? I honestly don't know. But it will be interesting to see what the future brings for him. He just might be for real!
