Congress Is Still Very Unpopular (And With Good Reason)

The charts above reflect the results of the latest Monmouth University Poll -- done between June 12th and 17th of 751 nationwide adults, with a margin of error of 3.6 points.

The adults were polled about their view of Congress. Only about 19% approve of the job Congress is doing, while a whopping 69% disapprove. And the election of 2018 did nothing to change the public's view. Note in the top chart that the poor view of Congress is about the same now as it was before the election.

The second chart shows this view is constant across all demographic groups -- adults, registered voters, both genders, all age groups, whites and minorities, all income groups, and all political persuasions. No one likes the job Congress is doing.

What are they unhappy with? Is it the Democratic House that seems most concerned with investigating Trump, or the Republican Senate which won't even vote on the bills sent to it by the House?

I could be wrong, but I think it's the Senate. The House has passed over a hundred bills, but the Senate has not even voted on any of them. McConnell is determined that bills passed by the House will not get a debate or vote.

This is rather ridiculous. He could bring the bills up for debate, let his GOP majority amend them, and then pass them. The House and Senate could them come to a compromise that both could pass. In other words, they could compromise. But compromise seems to be a dirty word in the current Congress, even though it would benefit the nation.

The public doesn't like the refusal to compromise. Poll after poll has shown they want the parties to compromise, and they are right. Compromise has worked for the good of the country in the past, and it could do so again. This current "my way or no way" attitude is certainly not working -- and there's too much of it on both sides, but McConnell seems to be taking it to a new level.

Members of Congress were sent to Washington to do the people's business. It's time they started doing that.
