Public Doesn't Support Impeachment (But Support's Growing)

The chart above reflects the results of the new CNN / SSRS Poll -- done between May 28th and 31st of a national sample of 1,006 respondents, and has a margin of error of 3.8 points.

There is a national debate raging over whether to impeach Donald Trump or not. Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives is currently opposed to starting an impeachment hearing. They give a couple of reasons -- 1) the Senate would not vote to remove Trump from office, and 2) the public is currently against impeachment (and they are afraid an impeachment hearing would hurt Democrats in the 2020 election).

I don't think those are good reasons. The public elected Democrats to control the House in 2018, and they did not do that to have the House bow to the Senate. They expected those Democrats to do the right thing, not the political thing (or the thing that would protect themselves in an election).

It does not matter what the Senate will or will not do. Donald Trump has broken the law, and it is up to the House to hold impeachment hearings, and vote on impeachment. It is true that currently the public opposes impeachment by about 13 points (41% support and 54% oppose). But the support is growing, and is up four points over April and 5 points over March.

House Democrats need to show the public what Trump has done (and continues doing). The best way to do that is to hold public televised impeachment hearings. Far more people will watch those hearings (and learn the truth) than will ever read the 400 page Mueller Report. And the impeachment hearings will have a larger audience that the current hearing in the various House committees.

House leaders need to remember that the public also opposed the impeachment of Richard Nixon when those hearings were started in February of 1974. It was only several months later, after the televised portion of those hearings, that a majority of the public started to believe Nixon should be impeached.

Donald Trump is corrupt and has broken the law by committing felonies. It is the job of the House to hold hearings on his impeachment. It is time for them to start doing their job!

  1. The numbers will change once the right hears the "real" truth, when televised hearings are held. Right now they just hear what FOX News isn't telling them!
