The Senate voted 57 to 43 to convict Trump, ten votes short of the required number to make the conviction effective. Only 7 Republicans had the courage to join 48 Democrats and 2 Independents in voting to convict. Those 7 Republican senators were -- Mitt Romney (Utah), Susan Collins (Maine), Bill Cassidy (Louisiana), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Ben Sasse (Nebraska), and Richard Burr (North Carolina).
It seems that a love of democracy and political courage are in short supply in the Republican Party. Most GOP officials consider their own jobs to be more important than our democratic system or the moral values they claim to have. They will have to live with their shame.
