Donald Trump, acting like the emperor he wants to be, told the world a couple of days ago that he would be renaming the Gulf of Mexico. He wants it to now be called the Gulf of America.
It's a silly idea. The gulf has been called the Gulf of Mexico for over four centuries. Can Trump really do it? Can he rename it?
The answer is yes and no.
In this country, the names for geographical items must be approved by the United States Board of Geographic Names which is under the auspices of the U.S. Interior Department. Since a Trump loyalist has been nominated to head the Interior Department, it is likely that, once approved, that person would accede to Trump's wishes and change the name.
But that doesn't mean any other country would go along with the name change. Other countries (like Mexico and Cuba) also control sections of the Gulf of Mexico, and it is very unlikely that would go along with the name change. It is also unlikely that any other countries would go along with it anyway.
For the world to accept the name change, it would have to be agreed to by other international organizations - the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, the International Hydrographic Organization, and the International Maritime Organization. The chances are nil that these organizations would go along with Trump's wishes.
Trump may think that being the head of the richest and most powerful nation makes him the defect king of the world, but it doesn't.
Like his promise to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico (and make Mexico pay for it), Trump has just made another promise he can't keep. He and his MAGA devotees will soon learn that.
