Trump seems to think the attack is now over and normalcy has resumed, since he threatened to cause even greater damage if Iran responds to the attack. But he is wrong. Iran will respond. The hardliners in their country will demand it.
The only questions are how long this war will last and how it will be fought. Republicans (who are currently supporting Trump's attack) would like to think Iran can't respond - that they have been too weakened by Israel's continuing attacks. That is wishful thinking.
Iran has multiple options for response.
* Iran can make missile attacks on the 40,000 U.S. troops in the area.
* Iran can use surrogates to make ground attacks against U.S. troops.
* Iran can put mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
* Iran can use their small navy to attack shipping at or near the Strait of Hormuz.
* Iran can cause terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens - both in the U.S. and around the world.
* Iran can make cyber attacks against U.S. infrastructure (or businesses).
An immediate ground war between U.S. and Iranian troops is unlikely - at least right now. But if each country's responses continue to the other country's responses, even that is not totally out of the question.
Trump has blundered into starting a war. We can only hope it doesn't cause significant damage or loss of life and isn't endless (like Afghanistan seemed to be).
