Americans woke up on Saturday morning to the news that Donald Trump had ordered the kidnapping of Venezuela's leader (Maduro) and his wife. The excuse used was that Maduro was guilty of drug trafficking and would be brought to the U.S. to stand trial. That's a specious argument at best.
If Trump was really opposed to drugs coming into the United States, he would not have pardoned the president of Honduras (who had been convicted of smuggling over 400 tones of drugs into this country).
And most drugs smuggled into the U.S. do not come from (or through) Venezuela. Colombia and Ecuador smuggled far more Cocaine, and China smuggles most Fentanyl.
Secretary of State Rubio said no more action against Venezuela was planned. If that is true, then the kidnapping was nothing more than a PR stunt for Trump - designed to distract voters from his problems (the Epstein files and the affordability crisis).
I believe it was more than just a publicity stunt. Venezuela has the latest oil reserves in the world - and Trump wants them to, once again, be in the hands of the big United States oil companies. He admitted as much in his speech on the Venezuela attack. He said:
“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies — the biggest anywhere in the world — go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure — the oil infrastructure — and start making money for the country.”
Trump seems to think he can now bully Venezuela's new president into allowing America's oil companies to control Venezuela's oil. I doubt she could. If she did, it's very likely the military would oust her and take over that country. That would mean Trump would have to send in American troops to seize the oil - if the continuing blockade doesn't work.
I fear the war Trump just started with Venezuela is far from over.
