Republicans Could Rehabilitate Their Party - Will They Even Try?

I am a progressive Democrat. So to say I am overjoyed by the results of the midterm election would be an understatement.

But I am also a believer in the two-party system. Our country seems to work best when we have two opposing parties in government - parties that are willing to debate the issues, and then work out a compromise that moves the country forward for the good of all its citizens.

The problem is we haven't had that since Trump and his MAGA cult took over the Republican Party. Today's GOP is unwilling to compromise on anything. They have backed Trump on everything - even when it's obvious that his agenda is wrecking the economy and hurting poor and working class citizens. They blindly followed Trump down the path to making the rich much richer and everyone else much poorer.

Last Tuesday, the American people made their wishes known - loud and clear. They don't like Trump's policies, and they made that clear by punishing the Republicans who backed those policies. It was a disaster for the GOP - but it is also an opportunity for them.

Donald Trump is now the lamest of lame ducks. He will get no legislation passed of any kind, and investigations of his corruption will start. All Trump is left with is the power to veto everything the Democrats try to do.

This presents the remaining Republicans with an opportunity. They can ignore their lame duck leader and help pass some measures that help ordinary Americans. Doing so would start the rehabilitation of their party.

I'm not saying they should agree with Democrats on everything. But there are some things they could agree on (and help override a veto), others they could try to work out a compromise on, and some they could oppose. It would be the start of a return to the old GOP (the one many voters liked).

The alternative is to continue to follow Trump blindly. That path would lead to oblivion (and a replay of the midterm bloodbath in 2028).

It will be interesting to see the choice they make.
