Bush has finally found someone dumb enough to take the new job of War Czar - that is, "fall guy" to take the blame for Bush and Cheney's total mismanagement of the Iraq war.
Bush has been trying to fill this spot for weeks. He knows the war is a disaster. He knows that the American people have turned against his ill-fated military venture. He knows that even his own party is starting to turn against him because of the war. So what does he do?
He creates a new government position, and appoints someone he can "throw under the bus" when things continue to go badly. Now he can claim that it wasn't really his fault or Cheney's fault - it was the fault of that new guy who obviously didn't know what he was doing.
This is a time-honored Republican ploy, to sacrifice an underling to save the powerful one who has screwed up. Remember Scooter Libby? But Bush has taken it one step further. Rather than sacrifice one of his few remaining loyalists, he has created a whole new job for his fall guy.
It's not like everyone doesn't know this either. Bush has been trying to fill the post for weeks, and has been turned down by scores of people. These people know the position wasn't created to win an unwinnable war, but to find a "goat" to take credit for Bush and Cheney's mistakes.
The new War Czar is Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute. I don't know whether he's dumb, or just doesn't know how to say no. I do know he's the new goat in Washington.
