  5. The common factor for all of those except the Mini Cooper is that they're about as fun to drive as a vacuum cleaner. I gave up on Consumer Reports long ago, their biases became quite clear once I actually test-drove their "selections". I rented a Toyota Corolla three days ago when I flew in to L.A. on a business trip. Bloody thing almost got me killed on the L.A. freeway system because it was as gutless as a Democratic congressman, had steering number than a Hollywood housewife on valium, and the brakes were squishier than that housewife's breast implants. It was a menace on the highway, and made me realize why the little Asian housewives drive so erratically here in the Silicon Valley -- it's because they're in cars that drive like s**t.
