World Cup Groups Are Set

The eight groups have now been set for the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament next summer in South Africa. The United States came out of the draw pretty good. They wound up in a group with England, Algeria and Slovenia. If the United States squad plays up to its potential, they should be able to move into the finals from this group, probably with England (two teams from each group advance to the finals). Here are the teams in each of the eight groups:

GROUP A - South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France.
GROUP B - Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece.
GROUP C - England, United States, Algeria, Slovenia.
GROUP D - Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana.
GROUP E - Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon.
GROUP F - Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia.
GROUP G - Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal.
GROUP H - Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile.

Just seven more months and the fun will begin (June 11, 2010). The United States will play England on June 12th, Slovenia on June 18th and Algeria on June 23rd. The results of those three games will determine whether they advance to the finals, or go home.

  1. I hate to tell you this, but the English media has already put out the bunting following the announcement of this group. It's what happens when you find you can slip momentarily out of an inferiority complex.
