Bill is right. Registering to vote should be one of the easiest things to do in a democracy -- because the more people who are able to vote (and actually exercise that right), the better a democracy works. By the same token, it should be difficult to buy a gun -- and everyone who does so should have to submit to a background check.
While it is good for a society to have everyone vote, it is not good for some people in that society to have access to a gun (and the Supreme Court has recognized that). Restricting those with a criminal record and those who are dangerously mentally ill from buying or owning a weapon is not a violation of the Second Amendment, and neither is restricting certain types of weapons from civilian ownership.
