The Republican Congress still seems to think it can score points with the American public by opposing everything President Obama tries to do -- both in domestic and foreign affairs. They should rethink that policy. Why do I say that? Just look at the numbers on the charts above.
These charts show the job approval of the president and Congress in the latest two polls (all taken in April). Note that in both the CNN/ORC Poll and the Bloomberg Poll the president's numbers are now positive -- with slightly more approving of his job performance than disapproving.
Meanwhile, the USA Today Poll and the YouGov Poll both show that approval of Congress remains in the cellar -- 34 to 37 points below President Obama's. The public knows that it is Congress that is refusing to compromise for the good of the country and they don't like it.
Now you might say that the public is upset with both parties in Congress, and that is true to an extent. But they are more upset with the Republicans. Note in the chart below that approval of the Republican Party is 10 points lower than approval of the Democratic Party -- and disapproval of the Democrats is 9 points lower than disapproval of the Republicans. The public knows which party is trying to get something done for the country, and which party is just being obstructionist.
Disapprove of congress....is a meaningless question. They disapprove because the taxes on the rich are not low enough? because abortion is not abolished??? because they have NOT passed laws allowing me to be a bigot???
