Neither of the two leading candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor could win in a field of nine candidates. With a little over 98% of the vote in, former Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez led the field with about 42.8%, and Andrew White (son of former governor Mark White) had about 27.4%. The other seven candidates garnered about 29.8%, forcing Valdez and White into a run-off.
