British Writer Pens The Best Description Of Trump I've Read

(Caricature of Donald Trump is by DonkeyHotey.)

The following was found at LA Progressive:

Someone on Quora asked “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:
A few things spring to mind.
Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.
I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.
And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.
Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.
There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.
After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.
He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:
‘My God… what… have… I… created?
If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

The author has a great command of the language but not so much with the truth. What is it, envy? Does he envy Trump’s wealth? His success? His fame? His great family? Or does he envy his lifetime of building great businesses and employing so many people. Foreigners envy America’s success and it is obvious that this foreigner envies MAGA!

    2. Hi Leroy.

His wealth cane from his father scamming the poor and taking advantage of government programs aka handouts. It was passed down through illegal means to evade tax. And he’s not nearly as rich as he claims, which will be revealed soon when his tax returns are made public. He makes money currently by operating businesses that profit from his presidency.

His success? Seriously? He’s a lame ass failed reality tv douche who inherited his money and can’t manage or negotiate.

His family is as compromised and terrible as he is, and will soon be up in front of judges for choosing money over their country.

White supremacy is never what made America great, and it won’t help this time either. MAGA hats are this generation’s swastika.

    3. I believe Leroy proves the author's point that about 1/3 of the American people look at what that diagnosed psychopath is and does, and make the stupid decision to support even more nastiness and stupidity. In their hard-to-understand cultish devotion, they are blind to how stupid and nasty they make themselves look to everyone else.

I lived in England for a year, which gives me some perspective on the amazing folks in the UK..as well as the shameful example of a so-called leader we have whose name also is British slang for fart (Yanks may not realize that if you "trump" in the UK...it means you've passed wind...yah...ironic eh?) The article in its entirety is fully accurate and yes, it disgusts me that some of my fellow Americans voted and still support this "lyin', cheatin', conman :(

    7. Have you seen the $127 million Trumplinks golf course that was built in the Bronx with New York's tax money, we call that "Bad Socialism" because he does not have to pay back that money to New York. That money could have been used to build senior or veteran affordable housing in the same spot, with access to shopping and health services. He did the same thing to Puerto Rico he personally owes the island a lot of money, $330 million for a Golf Club, he purchased and then walked away a year later and claim bankruptcy. I grew up watching Trump's family get away with a lot of things, I would think just another mob trying to get away with (can't say murder) crap!

    8. Oh, Leroy...

You ignorant fool. Just like the 1/3 the author spoke of. Too ignorant to see what is right in front of your face.

Or is it you cannot admit that you elected a monkey who is the pet of a Russian organ-grinder that makes him lie and deceive for his sheer enjoyment to undermine our government into the mockery it is?

The warnings and signs about who he is and what he would do to this country you ignored.

Now, you are seeing the truth behind this person and you would rather deny what is so painfully obvious than admit you were wrong. They say it takes a great man to admit when he is wrong.

You, just like the monkey you support, can never admit to being wrong. It's always somebody else.

He is a pathological liar, he is a cheat, a bully, a conman, a theif, and (my favorite) a white supremacist, much like his father, and grandfather. The ones who stand behind him have been a soiled portion of the fabric of our society, and Trump's election certainly knocked over enough stones to let the vermin crawl out from under them. They say he is a "Christian," but, most of the Christians I know are decent, kind people. None of his ilk are. These are people who would see my friends and family exiled, imprisoned, or, murdered. He does worship a particular god. The statue of THAT ONE resides on Wall Street in the form of a great Golden Bull. Go look at your history/mythology books, and you will find the name of Ba'al. His preferred sacrifice is children.

On the whole, Europeans see little to envy in a country in which 28 million people have no health cover and another 41 million are underinsured; where 35 million a year die from gunshot wounds; and where there is no paid maternity leave (the only developed country not to provide it). We feel quite kindly towards Americans, but don't particularly want to emulate them.

No "successful businessman" bankrupts cash cows like gambling casinos again and again.
A genuinely rich man feels no need to endlessly brag how rich he is any more than truly smart people have to brag how smart they are.

We in New York have had Prima Donny's numbers for a very long time. We know this fool. That's why he couldn't carry his own home state in the election. A far as we are concerned, people vote for Trump either because they are poorly informed, gullible, and easily led or because they have abysmally low standards. Have you not heard him in his own voice stand in front of cameras and call the murderer Putin a truth teller and his own FBI and CIA liars? And if you are a decent human being as you claim here then you certainly can't approve of a man who was heard on TV talking to Billy Bush admitting and bragging that because he was famous he could and did grab women by the pussy without their consent. Also, if you are a decent human being you cannot approve of him saying John McCain was a loser because he was a POW of war when he himself never served and dodged the draft. Certainly, in my home state of South Carolina you would not approve of him making fun of a journalist who had a physical handicap on National TV. If you missed any of these events, which by the way are just the tip of the iceberg, I suggest you go to youtube and look those incidents up and watch. The man is right in this articel when he says, "You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man." You just have to want to see them. Follow him on Twitter, watch how he speaks to people at press releases or at anytime he speaks. You would have to be daft to miss that what this man said is true; like it or not.

Well, actually he lies because he is a Russian asset and has been since legitimate banks stopped lending his incompetent ass money in the 1990's. Hard to tell if y'all are just stupid like most of his true followers, or if you are stupid AND purposely blind to his obvious faults. Faults, ha! Obvious trolling treachery. He has made America great again, alright, a great cautionary tale.

Just like Germans don't like to talk about what they enthusiastically and vocally made happen in the 1930's, venting all of their hate and frustration on innocents, aiding in the deaths of millions of people. That will be you. All of you. You fucking idiots in your red Nazi hats. What has he said, specifically, that leads you to believe he is racist or stupid? Give us policy issues, specifically, that you disagree with. What do you think he has done, or will do, specifically, that we are not or will not benefit from. I have debates with family or friends that when asked for specifics or examples, turn into 'adolescent' name calling or over talk. It's getting old. Step up! Support your statements! One could spend thousands of words and hours of time listing the references from the space between these two bookends of his career, all of which already exist out there. 1. Welcome to the conversation Eric. So almost none of what you've said is in the original article, or even many of the replies. They are just full of sophomoric character assaults and name calling, which was kind of my point in the first place. But at least you're getting closer to fact based comments, which encourages me to take you more seriously and actually listen. I'm still a little hard pressed to find detailed, specific, provable and supported facts here. Have you heard about the Senate probe into Russian collusion finding no evidence? I didn't hear it from the mainstream media. What about the Mueller investigation into Russian collusion? Now they're looking into everything and everyone but the kitchen sink! Don't they have enough evidence of collusion? According to you they do (2 years). And there seems to me to be a glaring omission that few folks are talking about. Why in Gods name would the Russians support a right wing hate mongering, sanctions leveling, war mongering administration, over a left wing government appeasing, military cutting, open boarders, global community loving, apology touring administration like Clinton and Obama? You can't tell me the Russians WOULDN'T benefit MORE from a Clinton administration than a Trump administration! I'm not buying it! But hey, we'll see! And way to rescue Ted! I'm listening.

    5. Trump promised the top floor in a proposed Trump Tower of Russia to Putin. Hillary did not. Character assaults and name calling is Trump's specialty. Findings from the Mueller investigation into collusion with Russia has yet to be released. The Republican controlled Senate and Fox News are not interested in finding Trump guilty of anything. Whenever an investigation finds suspected criminal activity related to or unrelated to their original purpose they are required to have that investigated. Russians ARE benefiting more by Trump's slow destruction of American democracy than they ever would have benefited from Hillary. He appoints people to his administration that have contributed to his getting elected and that are loyal to him. When those people fail to be loyal he gets rid of them. The Russian sanctions were from a bill passed by Congress with a veto proof majority, which Trump was very reluctant to sign and whose veto would have been embarrassing for Trump when over-ridden. Within the bill was written that the President could not remove the sanctions without Congress approval. Trump will be found guilty within the next month or two of some counts by the Mueller investigation, but probably over 100 counts by the other 16 investigations. Stay tuned. Fox News has protected Trump, but is slowly backing off their support as the Mueller investigation is close to ending. Rachel Maddow on MSNBC has already revealed what you seem to be missing. She has a strong liberal bias, unlike Faux Noise with liberal haters like Hannity and Tucker.

  15. Nate White, very well done.
When John McCain passed away late summer, flags were lowered to half staff across the country. Our president ordered the white house flag to be returned to its full height. After a full day of unrelenting public + private pressure, the president allowed the white house flag to be returned to its lowered position. For a full day the president sent this message to the McCain family: I am a DICK.
    That's our president.
A few weeks later he addressed the UN, bragged about himself; and the UN laughed.
The entire Mueller investigation, the indictments, the lies and jail time handed out to his closest 'friends' and advisors...all speak to the character that is the man who is our president.
    Its embarrassing.
Steve Bannon went from highly regarded to 'sloppy Steve'in the blink of an eye.
We the people have been punished for our lack of vision and foresight. How did we not see this coming during the lead up to the Republican convention?

Theresa May's government has tortured Tommy Robinson and imprisoned heroes like him for trying to defend Britain from Muslim rape gangs. Unlike Theresa May who has flooded Britain with violent immigrants, Trump has shown some compassion to the American people and is trying to keep violent immigrants out. He has worked very hard to revive the American economy and revive it he has. He has revived the American military which the British may have forgotten rescued them from the Nazis.

  21. Every intelligence agency: "Russia is attempting to corrupt our elections and undermine our democracy." Your man: "Russia if you're listening..." and "Every time he sees me, he says, 'I didn't do that,'... And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it... I think he is very insulted by it," This about Putin, the former KGB agent who has built the Russian state into one of the most corrupt, violent, and far-reaching criminal enterprises in history. Even in the extremely unlikely case that he was unaware of the now proven and admitted coordination between the inner circle of his campaign and Russian meddlers, his denial of the problem and attempts to thwart the investigation into it are likely treason.

How about the policy of protectionism about which Ronald Reagan said "We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends—weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag."

How about immigration policy which utterly rebukes this, emblazoned below the foremost symbol of American liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,/The wretched refuse of your teeming shore./Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,/I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

How about pulling out of the COP 21 climate accord, and undermining and eliminating legislation and infrastructure meant to not only limit the damage of climate change, but also to ensure clean air and water for our children.

Without any reference to the quality of his adulterous, vulgar, and dishonest character, these policies above, among many others, are more than enough to prove the great damage he is doing to our country, and most egregiously, to our reputation in the world.

    1. Wake up folks! Trump is way more likely to resist Putin and Russian interference and influence, and more capable, then Clinton or Obama could ever hope to be. And more importantly, those two appeasers and America apologists would not even have the will! And again, it is laughable to me that anyone in the free thinking world could even suggest that Putin and the Russians would benefit more from a Trump administration than a Clinton administration.

Believe it or not Trump agrees with the sentiment "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses...etc." He's just trying to separate that from "Give me your drug traffickers, your human traffickers, your convicted felons and rapists...!" Or did I miss that part of the statement? I mean do you guys really not get that! That group doesn't really care about American exceptionalism or freedom, accept for maybe freedom of incarceration. They still have to be vetted. They can be separated. But I get it, they are more votes for the Democrats. Give them free health care, free tuition, free condoms, clean needles, a pack of smokes and a cellphone, and you have a Democrat for life.

Have you read the climate accords! Give me a break! Have you seen the supporters and members of these accords! Brings to mind the old adage 'I could never be a part of an organization that would have you as a member' or is it 'that would have ME as a member' Oh well, you get my point!

It will not be surprising, but interesting to see where the next swing will take us in response to Trump. Well to the left of Obama I suspect. Unless there's reform of the two party system, the spasms and casyms will olny increase in our society.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Our political system is NOT "knee-jerk reactionary". Yes, it does swing like a pendulum, but not at breakneck speed. But speaking of reactionaries, Trump is an excellent example. He and his "buddies" are of no conscience, and yet keep turning back the clock. He's so easily "led to belief in falsehoods", that if he weren't such a reactionary tyrant would be pathetic. But his personal pathos, brought upon himself by himself and his foolish and dangerous notions, is typical reactionary. A reactionary turns back the clock, just like Trump made it a point to overturn as many of the Obama Administration's advances. Trump is one of those "star-struck" narcissists, who idolizes anyone with money, fame (whether deserved or not), and cannot hide his admiration for people who are "bottom-feeders". He appeased Kim Jong Un, while getting nothing in return. (I can only imagine him drooling all over Kim and his great, authoritarian power. (I'm left wondering if he ate Korean food, or if he had Big Macs flown in from Seoul? As for his "pal" Vlad, he (Trump) pretends all over the place that he keeps telling the Russian Oligarch/Dictator "No" to this or that, when we know that he agreed wholeheartedly that Vlad's saying he had "nothing to do with the election in '16" .

I still don't think from what I learned over many years of schooling, that the "political pendulum" will swing in either direction very fast. That in itself concerns me a LOT!

  29. I agree with everything the writer has said about the artless embarrassment, the orange slug like waste of space polluting all - from the White House.

As an older white guy, I think I can understand the current, primarily, Anglo-Saxon push back against the status quo.

Sure, the world is changing and the dominance of our culture is on the wane after a tumultuous time where the world was literally our oyster, beginning with the Industrial Revolution, land grabs of nations and entire continents, and on to an ever increasing technological age of advancement.

And now, as the world becomes more progressive and ultimately more equal, we rail against being part of the melting pot, instead of our perceived station above it.

So what are the majority of middle aged, and older white males with a similar gene pool to my own doing in the likes of the US and the UK?

Basically they are cutting their nose to spite their increasingly collective and idiotic faces.

Although arguments about sometimes out of touch politicians has some traction, where arrogance takes hold hand in hand with oppressive often knee jerk laws creating a myriad of ways where the general populace feels increasingly like they have been first strangled, then deposited into some gigantic pressure cooker - and promptly forgotten by our 'we know best and shut up' elite.

But instead of using the democratic structures and principals that have been fought and died for there is now a gathering groundswell of populist belief that this system of governance is no longer working. And rather than seek compromise and change from democratic institutions where people's voices and votes actually matter, a damn the torpedoes, let's shake it all up and blast it apart seems to be the modus operandi for this gathering storm of discontent.

In the UK, it seems like Brexit is a vote to go back to a time when England was the centre of an Empire and had its own closed and select trading block, which happened to take up about a quarter of the planets landmass. By leaving the EU, one of the worlds leading economic zones, the U.K. will not turn the clock back to its glorious empire building past but will quickly diminish by robbing itself of its economic lifeblood.

In all likelihood, the United Kingdom will be no more, and angry old white men will not have the time or inclination to complain about their English town having too many dark skinned immigrants living next door because they will be spending too much time just trying to survive in a country they have collectively and mindlessly kneecapped in their folly for some nebulous past glory - which probably never was?

But for sheer folly and sublime reality show driven ignorance, the United States takes the prize.

How the world's most powerful nation and leading democracy can install such a perverse caricature of the dark side of human nature is sickening and beyond belief.

A blustering orange maniac who tweets nonsensical rubbish ad nauseam and who's diatribes against all that make democracy work has been plain to see. The media, the courts, the constitution, national and world security are all under threat.

Donald Trump, to put it mildly, is not quite all there and is such an unstable danger that the Forty fifth President of the United States of America could very well be the last.

And that makes me sick to the core of my stomach and at the very least I can give a signal to Trump and all who supported him that the majority of us believe in a fair, just and democratic way of life.

So fuck you & fuck you all for your mindless, greedy and craven stupidity.

    1. Blue Sky I could not possibly agree with you more, and had some time ago come to the horrific conclusion that the rapid destruction of our democracy may very well signal an end to free and fair elections. The decision of the GOP to unite and protect Trump, his attacks on the constitution and the rule of law, proves they have pledged their allegiance to fascism. They have completely succumbed to the lure of greed and power and, with Trump, see an opportunity to remain in power forever, protecting, and being protected by, a dictator. I saw Trump for exactly what he is before he even took office. My every prediction of his agenda is rapidly coming to fruition. It's so blatantly obvious that his every tactic, every word, is nearly an exact replica of those used by Hitler and his propaganda minister in Nazi Germany. And yet his ignorant cult cannot, or will not, see what is right in front of their faces every day. He makes no attempts whatsoever to hide his fascism, and they cheer him on. Terrifying stupidity. "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

  37. Please stop branding all Americans with slurs because of Trump. His popularity is at record low levels. More Americans voted for Clinton than Trump; a broken system of presidential electors brought the monster into office. We twice elected Obama, whom you seem to respect, by great margins. We are now correcting the system, working on ending gerrymandering, pushing for gun control, trying to get big money out of elections, exposing the Russian manipulations that truly brought "Twitler" to power. How would you feel if I opined that your own population adored boorish Boris and thus created the disaster that you face with Brexit? I’m tired of being labeled by Brits, who feel some kind of innate superiority. Both our countries have high ideals, good people, and dreams for a better future. Please support those of us Americans who are working hard to expose Trump's crimes, what I believe to be his mental illnesses, his lies, and his other despicable actions. I love Great Britain (especially after discovery via DNA testing that I am 97% of your heritage) and wish more of its citizens would appreciate the challenge good Americans are facing, instead of lumping us all with the hateful racists and other Trump lovers. One last tip: many times, as a visitor to England, I’ve been told "Why, you’re nothing like an American!" While I understand these people thought they were offering a compliment, they actually were being offensive. What was overlooked was the fact that one man could not shame the shameless. While Trump is definitely not a politician, he has to work with 535 individuals who most certainly are. These 535 so called representatives are locked into a win/lose mentality to keep their positions and power and have all sold their souls to the highest bidder. They are the cream of the crop and masters of the lying and manipulative craft. It should be obvious to everyone at this point that in order for any substantial change to occur, we absolutely have to remove the money from the law making process and impose term limits on this body.

  50. I visited Europe in the summer of 2016. At that time Trump looked like a long shot. People of several countries asked me what was going on in America and I assured them Trump could not win. Was I ever wrong. Sorry, I guess you won't have me back again.

When the golfer-in-chief finally departs on that day (should be declared a national holiday in his honor) he'd better not head back to NYC where it is quite likely he could end up in court and jailed (unlikely) for his wretched schemes and illegal capers. A very large orange suit to complement that hideous dye job would be fitting, and just maybe that fashion fop, Stoney (aka Roger Stone) could critique his attire and tell him how great he looks.

Trump supporters will ask you to provide proof of why they are wrong just to waste your time and energy. Not one has ever realized the truth that is right in front of them. That we blame trump is obvious, yet he is not the only problem - when he is gone these right wing racists will still be here.

  54. And lets not forget that he hired Steven Miller, a self proclaimed white supremist to work in the White House. Steve Bannon too, but that didn't last long. And who can forget the appointment of Jeff Sessions, who once said he thought well ok the KKK until he found out some of the smoke marijuana?

  55. Please, this is not a republican or democrat or independent or any kind of partisan problem. It's a problem with the corruption in our government, period. Watch this video: https://www.facebook.com/RepresentUs/videos/410253132875542/?v=410253132875542. We, as a people, are not being represented by our government. We need to make a major change, and make it soon, or we are all doomed.

The think that has always amazed me is that there were always two sides directly opposed to the ideas, actions, and intentions of each and the other. Each entity in the world has it's 10% ers, extremists, dreamers, misfits, elite misguided politicians, and it's visionaries. I just pray we don't all end up in a firey mess with someone yelling: "Here come the dragons" or "We won, I THink."

  57. In Germany, I was mobbed by a humourless art school bunch from several nations making look Trump like a humorist in comparison to them, just cause I was the only one in that film school to predict that Trump actually may win .the fact that an opposition can be so blind to what's coming reminds one of the III Reich.also when i see the shameless bullying on the streets in berlin by foreigners towards germans, dau ater day, qmd the disrespect they ddsplay towards good German people also, I begin to dislike the likes of trump less and less.white people can't be expected to constantly apologize what for what has been done in their history.each day some fascist afghan or syrian murders a German and the left says nothing.these are real real reasons why people vote so called populists.the shameless arrogance with which foreigners expect Europeans to bow to their own poor and pitiful standards has been suffered for decades now, when Turks even expect you to speak rotten and bad German,so that their lazy incompetent so called brains do not get overworked.but ours did.as they constantly we're obliged to take Islamic dumbasses into account and becoming servants to their mental laziness, not to mention the billions they receive on welfare.the problem is real and has been criminally hidden by the left

  58. Some truth. Some opinion. Some presumption.

I find Trump exercising a razor wit at times.

Humour? Humour is in the ear of the humoured.

  60. Let's speak to the DANGER that this man represents. Anyone observing him closely will notice a Pattern emerging. When its time for something negative to pop up, he claims the Headlines in some kind of way. But the DANGER comes in his words or wording. He needs to be gone from the White House. The same supporters others above speak of will come to his aid. Enough exsist that wont hesitate to cause bloodshed. His lack of wisdom may cause Great Violence if he isn't rempved very carefully. Thats my fear.

  61. The author is SPOT ON, as the British say!! The most accurate description of Trump I have ever read! I may have added one thing --- the Brits love animals for the most part ---- Trump has called dogs "filthy, dirty animals". He also approves of his spawn killing elephants, leopards, etc. Bravo to this piece!

  67. Brilliant writing! Trump's move into Presidency is both unpopular and unprecedented Those responsible for this phenomenon range from the very conservative, very cunning, to the very gullible but the system itself provided the loophole for USA to be 'kidnapped'. His claim to fame is MAGA but despite extensive research I can't really pinpoint when America was "great" at any time in history. Their mega-wealthy have wielded their power in efforts to avoid tax since before Independence and despite a devastating civil war still support the slavery of common people of all races. Trump is a worry but Trumpism is a nightmare!

  68. I enjoyed the article, great stuff but then my mind slowed down and British colonial history reared it's disgusting, ugly, greedy head. Who are the British to cast stones when they sucked the blood out of every country they colonized. Lovely language and an enjoyable read since I agree with all that you've presented. What I have a hard time with is presenting the British on some high moral and civilized pedestal full of charm and loveliness when they savagely raped and pillaged the planet. The reason you're where you are now is because you stole everything just like the United States did... Sense of humor and civility are lost to me when I know well the evil of the British Empire. I enjoy a good Monty Python laugh just like the next guy but contrasting Trump with the civility and charm of the British to make a point is laughable.

  69. We have to remember that trump supporters really belong to a cult. Trump is worshiped (like the bull...), and it is well known that cult leaders get away with many immoral acts. The lies, the womanizing, the selfish indulgences are overlooked. He is the White Hero to his followers. He can get those pesky environmental regulations revoked. He can look tough to his followers by putting the world in jeopardy of nuclear annihilation.

Mark Kahn, it is too easy to go back into history and criticize the Brits for the past mistakes by their country. We could do the same in the USA for out treatment of Native Americans, Blacks, Japanese, etc. OK, Britain was never great, America was never great. Okey-dokey. But we were on the path to getting better, until trump.
We nowadays have serious challenges with climate change and global poverty and disease to overcome. I think that the Brits have settled down rather nicely, not raping and pillaging any more, on the whole. The USA, well, it is currently threatening the very survival of its people and of the earth's people, thanks to trump and his followers.

  76. Spot-On!... unfortunately. If only he were just a bad-actor who will eventually go away. But, I am an American who is watching the deconstruction of democracy & decency in America. Alarm & Sorrow! I don't believe he was legitimately elected as there was Voter-Fraud, Gerrymandering,Russian interference, etc. That is the only way a Minority could rule in a democracy. This minority is bent on establishing an oligarchy - they are enemies of democracy.

  77. Agreed on every single point and every last word. I've been simultaneously ashamed, scared, and disgusted ever since this traitorous abomination was installed. I just sincerely hope that when looking at America, the rest of the world realizes Trump in fact LOST by 3 million votes. Trump was installed, not elected. It's cold comfort to remind myself that the majority of us didn't vote for him when I have to see the bloviating bastard spewing hateful and dishonest nonsense while shredding the fabric of our country. I just hope we'll survive this and be able to undo the incredible damage he's doing.

  78. I sit here in Australia still stunned that that he got into power the article is spot on and sums up the man perfectly if he were here he would not be in charge of the country he would be in prison. I feel for America your country will be so diminished when Trump has finished with it. The day of America being great are over I think you will be playing second fiddle for many yeas to come the rest of the world will simply get on with business and living and wait for trump to be removed. America you have my sincere and heartfelt condolences.

  80. I admire many things about the Brits - they are, in general, witty and wry. And because their country has suffered so much at the hands of evil, they readily recognize evil and stupid and choose not to put up with it. We could learn a few lessons from them if only we'd listen.

  81. Spot on. I can't wait for the Mueller report to hit the net ( The Donald will do his utmost to hinder its publication) This hugely dishonest man has so diminished the USA with his crude ravings his lack of any nuance but most of all his complete lack of grace.

  82. Nate White(writer) is spot-on in every respect. I guess it's true when they say if you want clear, concise, straightforward, unvarnished truth, ask a Brit!..
I would add that Trump is an arrogant, narcissists, self-serving, lying, manipulating, con-artist that has spent his entire life feeding his ego, greed, power and lust and he proves it daily. If anybody wants hard core examples, let me know.
