The Public Doesn't Trust Trump With Nuclear Weapons

This chart is from a survey of 2,264 adults between January 7th and February 1st of this year. It was done by the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, and has a margin of error of 2.1 points.

It shows that the American people do not trust Donald Trump with nuclear weapons. It was once thought that this country being the first to strike another country with nuclear weapons was unthinkable. But Trump has refused to take a nuclear weapons first strike off the table. He believes it should be an option for him to do at his own discretion.

The problem is that Trump has no discretion (or competence).

That has most Americans (68%) thinking Congress should pass a law that would not allow any president to use nuclear weapons without congressional approval (unless as a response to a nuclear attack launched against this country). They don't want Trump (or any president) to have the right to launch a first strike with nuclear weapons.

And this view crosses political lines. It includes a majority of Democrats (74%), Independents (73%), and Republicans (59%). No one is comfortable with Trump's finger on the nuclear button.
