Poll Shows Arpaio Could Win Arizona GOP Senate Primary
The racist convicted criminal (and Trump pardoned) Joe Arpaio has announced that he will run for the Senate seat in Arizona being vacated by Republican Jeff Flake. Does he have a chance of winning the Republican Primary? A new poll shows that he might actually have a chance to win!
It is the ABC 15 / OHPI Poll -- done on January 9th of 504 likely Republican primary voters, and has a margin of error of 4.36 points.
It shows that Martha McSally (31%) and Joe Arpaio (29%) are virtually tied at the present time, when the poll's margin of error is considered (with McSally leading by a slim 2 points). However, if Donald Trump endorses Arpaio, he would rise to 35% with McSally staying at 31% (and Trump probably would endorse him, since Arpaio would be a 100% yes man for Trump in the Senate).
In other words, Arpaio has a very good chance of winning the Republican primary.

Democrats Get Lucky - Joe Arpaio Is Running For Senate
(Photo of Joe Arpaio from Wikipedia is by Gage Skidmore.)
Former Sheriff and convicted criminal Joe Arpaio has announced that he is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jeff Flake in Arizona. He will be running against two other Republicans in the state's primary -- Rep. Martha McSally and former state senator Kelli Ward.
All are Trump-supporting right-wing extremists, but Arpaio carries the most baggage. That doesn't mean he couldn't get elected though. The Arizona Republican Party is controlled by the teabagger/trumpistas and Arpaio is a hero among those people.
This is the same wing of the GOP that nominated Roy Moore in Alabama. They could easily make that same mistake by nominating Arpaio in Arizona. And it could have the same result -- the election of a Democrat in a race most believed would be won by the Republicans.
While Arpaio is still admired by the teabagger/trumpistas, he lost his last election as sheriff in his home county after being convicted of violating judicial orders (even though he was pardoned by Trump). I think most Arizonans would find it distasteful to be represented by Arpaio, and that's good news for Democrats.
Could Arpaio really be nominated? Only time will tell, but I think he would have to be considered the front-runner right now. Right-wingers seem to have a knack for nominating bad candidates.
For me, the senate race in Arizona just got a lot more interesting.

Public Says No To Trump On Arpaio Pardon & Immigration
Evidently, Donald Trump doesn't care what most Americans think as long as he can keep his rabid group of trumpistas happy. While the trumpistas were happy with his pardon of bigot Joe Arpaio, ab significant majority (60%) of Americans thought it was the wrong thing to do. That's a 26 point gap over those who thought it was right.
And it's not just the pardon where the public disagrees with Trump. They generally disagree with him on immigration. By 19 points, the public says immigrants help this country more than they hurt it. And by a 45 point gap, they would prefer undocumented immigrants be able to apply for legal status than be deported. Americans also support the DACA program (which stops the deportation of undocumented children who've grown up in this country) by a 34 point gap over those who oppose it.
Those are not tiny numbers, and they show that Trump's bigotry against immigrants is not shared by the public.
These charts reflect the results of an NBC News / SurveyMonkey Poll -- done between August 24th and 29th of a random national sample of 10,129 adults, with a margin of error of 1.4 points.

The Arpaio Pardon Was One More Step Toward Fascism
(This caricature of Nobel Prize economist Paul Krugman is by DonkeyHotey.)
Paul Krugman believes Trump's pardon of Arpaio was a dangerous mistake - a mistake that moves this country closer to fascism. Here is some of what he had to say in his New York Times column:
Let’s call things by their proper names here. Arpaio is, of course, a white supremacist. But he’s more than that. There’s a word for political regimes that round up members of minority groups and send them to concentration camps, while rejecting the rule of law: What Arpaio brought to Maricopa, and what the president of the United States has just endorsed, was fascism, American style.

There’s a word for political regimes that round up members of minority groups and send them to concentration camps, while rejecting the rule of law: What Arpaio brought to Maricopa, and what the president of the United States has just endorsed, was fascism, American style.
So how did we get to this point?
Trump’s motives are easy to understand. For one thing, Arpaio, with his racism and authoritarianism, really is his kind of guy. For another, the pardon is a signal to those who might be tempted to make deals with the special investigator as the Russia probe closes in on the White House: Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.
Finally, standing up for white people who keep brown people down pleases Trump’s base, whom he’s going to need more than ever as the scandals creep closer and the big policy wins he promised keep not happening.
But the Trump base of angry white voters is a distinct minority in the country as a whole. Furthermore, those voters have always been there. Fifteen years ago, writing about the radicalization of the G.O.P., I suggested the hard core of angry voters was around 20 percent of the electorate; that still seems like a reasonable guess.
What makes it possible for someone like Trump to attain power and hold it is the acquiescence of people, both voters and politicians, who aren’t white supremacists, who sort-of kind-of believe in the rule of law, but are willing to go along with racists and lawbreakers if it seems to serve their interests.
There have been endless reports about the low-education white voters who went overwhelmingly for Trump last November. But he wouldn’t have made it over the top without millions of votes from well-educated Republicans who — despite the media’s orgy of false equivalence or worse (emails!) — had no excuse for not realizing what kind of man he was. For whatever reason, be it political tribalism or the desire for lower taxes, they voted for him anyway.
Given the powers we grant to the president, who in some ways is almost like an elected dictator, giving the office to someone likely to abuse that power invites catastrophe. The only real check comes from Congress, which retains the power to impeach; even the potential for impeachment can constrain a bad president. But Republicans control Congress; how many of them besides John McCain have offered full-throated denunciations of the Arpaio pardon?
The answer is, very few. Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House, had a spokesman declare that he “does not agree with this decision” — not exactly a ringing statement. Yet Ryan did better than most of his colleagues, who have said nothing at all.
This bodes ill if, as seems all too likely, the Arpaio pardon is only the beginning: We may well be in the early stages of a constitutional crisis. Does anyone consider it unthinkable that Trump will fire Robert Mueller, and try to shut down investigations into his personal and political links to Russia? Does anyone have confidence that Republicans in Congress will do anything more than express mild disagreement with his actions if he does?
As I said, there’s a word for people who round up members of ethnic minorities and send them to concentration camps, or praise such actions. There’s also a word for people who, out of cowardice or self-interest, go along with such abuses: collaborators. How many such collaborators will there be? I’m afraid we’ll soon find out.

Arizona "Birther" Sheriff Will Misuse Taxpayer Money
The infamous sheriff of Maricopa County (Arizona), Joe Arpaio, has never cared much for laws, rules, or saving taxpayer money. He is being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department for using his department to investigate and harass his political opponents, and for systematically violating the rights of Hispanics. And Maricopa County has lost millions of dollars in lawsuits stemming from the sheriff's racist and illegal actions.
Now this legal darling of the teabaggers seems to have completely gone around the bend. He has decided to waste taxpayer money on an issue that not only has been settled for a while now, but is really outside of the authority of his office. He is going to investigate the issue of President Obama's birth certificate -- to see if it is forged. He doesn't seem to care that the state of Hawaii has vouched for the validity of the birth certificate, and the Constitution (through the Full Faith And Credit provision) requires Arizona (and all other states) to accept a birth certificate issued by Hawaii.
The sheriff's office in Maricopa County has a cold case division operated by a volunteer staff "of people with skills and backgrounds that make them qualified to investigate cases". However, that unit has been inactive for several months now due to "budgetary limitations within the Maricopa County Sheriff's office". In spite of the fact that there is no money for this group to investigate real crimes that need to be solved, the crazy sheriff has decided there is enough money for him to send the unit on a political wild goose chase.
Arpaio says, "This investigation does not involve politics." That is an outrageous lie. It involves nothing but politics -- teabagger politics. He said he is investigating because of a complaint filed by the teabagger organization in Surprise, Arizona -- a group that could not be satisfied about the "birther" issue if they each individually received official copies of the birth certificate from Hawaii that were notarized and signed by the governor of that state.
This is clearly a political move and a waste of taxpayer money. It's long past time for the voters in Maricopa to dump this fool.

Sheriff Arpaio - Still A Buffoon !
Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio is at it again -- proving that he is far more interested in publicity and posing than in any kind of justice. He just spent tens of thousands of dollars to serve a search warrant on a suspected criminal. And since this suspected criminal had a record, Arpaio pulled out all the stops. He brought a SWAT team in several armored vehicles. One of those vehicles was a tank (with actor Steven Seagal sitting on top of it dressed in army fatigues).
The vehicles rolled onto the suspected criminal's property and the tank ran through a wall of a building on the property -- crushing the building and everything inside it. What was inside it? Was it terrorist weapons of mass destruction? Not quite. It was 115 chickens, and the building was their home. But those chickens will never threaten the peace and safety of Arizona again, because they're now dead!
It turns out that the man they were after, Jesus Llovera, was suspected of engaging in cockfighting. And that record he had was for a single misdemeanor count of attending a cockfight. In addition, he did not have a history of owning any weapons or engaging in any violent behavior (and in fact, no weapons were found -- just chickens).
This was a ridiculous raid that did not need all the manpower and armored vehicles the Sheriff used. But then he didn't use them because they were needed. He used them because they looked good for the cameras. He was helping Seagal out by letting him go along on a raid, which would be filmed and featured on Seagal's "reality" series. I wonder how they're going to edit this to keep Seagal and Arpaio from looking like the fools that they obviously are.
If the sheriff needed armored vehicles and a tank to apprehend a person suspected of engaging in cockfighting, I have to wonder what he would need to apprehend a real violent criminal. But then maybe that's why he goes after cockfighters and undocumented immigrants -- because real criminals are just too dangerous.
When is Arizona going to realize just how silly Arpaio makes the state look and get rid of the buffoon?

FBI Investigating Sheriff Arpaio

We've discussed before on this blog about how Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio plays fast and loose with the legal system, by abusing prisoners and using racial stereotyping against Hispanics to wage a one-man war on immigrants. He is even being investigated by the Justice Department regarding these matters.
Now it looks like that was just the surface elements of his illegal behavior. According to KPHO Channel 5 news in Phoenix, Sheriff Arpiao may have used his office (and his deputies) to get back at political opponents and others he doesn't like. This is a clear abuse of power of his elected office, and is now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Arpaio has sent his deputies to Maricopa County Board meetings, where they have arrested members of the public merely for applauding the speeches of Arpaio opponents. It seems to be an obvious and rather heavy-handed attempt to have a chilling effect on free speech.
But the sheriff didn't stop there. Political opponents and critics of the sheriff have received visits from the sheriff's deputies. The deputies have never found any evidence of laws being broken, but that is not the purpose of the visits. The visits are simply to remind these people of the power wielded by a sitting sheriff. Her is a list of some of the people he has tried to intimidate in this way:
-- Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, who sicced the Justice Department on Arpaio for his racial-profiling practices.
-- Mesa Police Chief
-- Dan Saban, who ran against the sheriff in 2004 and 2008
-- Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard
-- Maricopa County Manager David Smith
-- The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors
-- Superior Court Presiding Judge Barbara Mundell
-- ACLU attorney Daniel Pochoda
Of course, this kind of abuse of power is illegal, and that is why the FBI is investigating. Hopefully, he has overstepped his bounds enough that the FBI will be able to gather enough evidence to arrest and try him and remove him from office.
He has been an embarrassment to honest and decent lawmen everywhere for far too long.

Sheriff Arpaio Gets His Wings Clipped

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County (Arizona) has earned himself a reputation. He has housed prisoners in tents in the hot Arizona sun, made them wear pink clothing and forced them to eat "meal loaf" (that days meal mixed together and pressed into a loaf).
He seems to think it is not only his duty to arrest and house suspects, but to also punish and humiliate them (even though many have yet to be convicted of a crime). He has a following among right-wingers, but most decent people consider him a buffoon who can't even perform his job appropriately.
But perhaps the most egregious of his law enforcement sins is racial profiling. In his zeal to fight undocumented immigrants, he has instructed his deputies to stop cars with Hispanics and check their ID. He has also sent deputies to Hispanic parts of the counties to set up roadblocks for the express purpose of checking ID's.
He doesn't seem to care that stopping all Hispanics without any probable cause is undoubtably racial profiling (and is illegal). The Justice Department is currently investigating these activities.
Fortunately, the Department of Homeland Security is not waiting for the investigation to be completed. They have completed a new agreement with Maricopa county, and that agreement bans the sheriff's illegal activities. They have told the sheriff that he can only check the immigration status of jail inmates. He cannot go out and racially profile to find undocumented immigrants.
Thank goodness. It's about time someone reined in this outlaw lawman.

Justice Dept. Asked To Investigate Arpaio

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been an embarrassment to Arizona and the entire Southwest for several years now. He has ignored established legal procedures in an attempt to gain publicity and notoriety. He is famous for housing inmates in tents in the Arizona heat, making them wear pink clothing and feeding them a "loaf" made up of the day's menu all mixed together.
Finally, it looks like someone is trying to rein him in. The Mayor of Phoenix, Phil Gordon, has asked the United States Justice Department to investigate the sheriff. He wants to know if the sheriff has violated any civil rights laws in his very public crackdown on illegal immigrants.
Gordon is joined in this belief by the Arizona Ecumenical Council, the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League. They say the sheriff's patrols have "evoked a police state atmosphere" resulting in "detainment on the basis of a racial profile and dehumanization of innocent people".
To be blunt, he is using racial profiling against Hispanics, so he can make himself look good by catching some undocumented immigrants. Arpaio claims he does not use racial profiling, but I don't know what else you could call it. His high-profile patrols only target Hispanic neighborhoods. How many innocent Hispanic citizens does he harass to get the few "illegals" he arrests?
I hope the Justice Department does investigate Arpaio's methods. Sheriffs have a lot of power in our system, but even they must obey the laws and rules. It is against the law to racially profile.
Hispanic citizens should have the same rights as other American citizens. They should not be profiled and hassled (even if subsequently released) just because they are Hispanic.
