The Trump Indictments Have Increased MSNBC Viewership

The following is part of a posting at Axios.com:

MSNBC has seen a boost in primetime ratings this summer, thanks in large part to its coverage of the slew of indictments against former President Donald Trump.

Why it matters: Fox News has been the undisputed cable news ratings leader for years. But Trump's legal woes, combined with Tucker Carlson's departure from Fox, have helped MSNBC close in on Fox News' prime-time lead several times in the past few months.

Driving the news: MSNBC beat Fox News in primetime last Monday and Tuesday evenings thanks to its coverage of Trump's indictment in a fourth major case in Georgia over efforts to overturn the presidential election's outcome.

  • Rachel Maddow's interview with Hillary Clinton after the indictment drew an unprecedented 3.9 million viewers on Monday evening.
  • The network narrowly beat Fox News in primetime on Monday, July 10, as well, although it surpassed Fox more consistently during the second quarter.
  • Mondays tend to be MSNBC's highest-rated primetime evenings, given that's when Maddow continues to regularly host her 9 p.m. show.

Flashback: MSNBC starting to beat Fox News in primetime periodically following Carlson's departure in the April.

  • The network beat Fox News in primetime ratings for a full week in early June during its coverage of Trump's second indictment on charges relating to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, ending Fox News' 120-week primetime winning streak.
  • Throughout several points during the second quarter, MSNBC also beat Fox News in the prized 25-54 year-old advertising demographic.
  • While most of the country is experiencing some level of fatigue over Trump's legal battles, MSNBC's viewership has increased with each subsequent indictment.

MSNBC Leads In Daytime Viewers For The 1st Quarter

The Nielsen numbers show that for the first quarter of 2021, MSNBC led all other cable shows in daytime ratings. Fox led in primetime for the quarter, although both MSNBC and CNN narrowed the gap. During the week of the January 6th insurrection, CNN led in average viewers.

Finally!!!

MSNBC has finally realized what a treasure they have in Joy Reid.

Reid has been hosting a weekend morning show on the network for a while now -- and this talented journalist is not afraid to speak truth to power.

Starting today, she is moving to primetime weekdays on the network. Her new show airs at 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).

Cable News Channels - Who Watches And Where

These maps and charts are from Morning Consult. The maps show where the audience is in the country for the three cable news networks. The darker the color, the less the viewership -- and the lighter the color, the more viewers.

The charts show the counties with the most viewers for each network -- for the general population, Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.

There Are A Few Honest Republicans Left In The U.S.

The pictures above are of Nicolle Wallace (currently with MSNBC) and Steve Schmidt. Both are life-long Republicans, and have been involved in the campaigns and administrations of several Republican officials. They are also honest Americans who love their country, and they are worried about what Donald Trump and the current crop of congressional Republicans are doing to this country. The following is an exchange they had on MSNBC last Thursday:

STEVE SCHMIDT

This president is besieged by investigations, and all around this president from Scott Pruitt and cabinet secretaries who have already resigned – we see fantastic levels of corruption, the type of corruption we haven’t seen in this country going back a hundred years.

And what’s increasingly clear, whether the target is James Comey, whether it’s Director Mueller the Special Counsel, the reality is that this president will burn everything to the ground to protect himself from this investigation moving closer to the Oval Office.

Everything he’s doing is a strategy of incitement. He’s trying to harden & incite his base through the most deliberate, the intense misinformation campaign that this country has ever seen.

This president is a serial liar. He is lying to the American people every day. He is making up things out of whole cloth. He is serially attacking vital institutions that are necessary to the security of the country.

He will apparently stop at nothing.

There is a second scandal, and that is the complicity of the majority party – the Republicans in the Congress.

The fact is that there is not one of them, not one who will stand up and say that we are a country of laws, that no one person is above the law, that these institutions are vital and necessary and objective truth matters.

This is propaganda. This is what propaganda looks like. It’s what it smells like. We have never seen anything like it. What we’re seeing is an attack from within on vital institutions like a person’s body would be attacked by a flesh-eating bacteria, and it is unprecedented in America.

NICOLLE WALLACE

We started the hour with news that Emmet Flood, one of the president’s new lawyers representing him in the Russia probe, attended this meeting on Capital Hill with the Gang of Eight where they reviewed the most sensitive of information about a human informant. Can you imagine any scenario Alberto Gonzales [former Attorney General under George W. Bush] or Harriet Myers [former White House Counsel to George W. Bush] would have checked in with Pat Fitzgerald who was investigating the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame?

STEVE SCHMIDT

It should never have happened. I mean on the one-to-ten scale of inappropriateness it comes in about 157. An the real issue now is what’s the next transgression? What’s the next time that the Department of Justice backs up because of the whims, because of the demands of the president.

We’re moving as John Heilemann said “closer and closer to crisis to the critical hour.” And the rule of law in this country must be defended.

There’s a potential, absent any defense of it by leaders in this country, that we’ll be living in a very different type of country. For 240-plus years the rule of law has held in the United States of America and the spinning of these conspiracy theories, the constancy of the attacks, the victimization that Trump puts upon himself – always blaming someone, this nefarious conspiracy – this is the hallmark of autocratic leadership back to the beginning of time. This is not normal in a democratic republic like the United States. And it should be opposed.

Most Fox Viewers Have A Simplistic View Of The World

The chart above is from the YouGov Poll, using information gathered from the profiles of 200,000 YouGov members.

It shows that most Fox News viewers (60%) see the world in black and white terms. Things are either true or false, and people either believe in truth or they are against the truth. This very simplistic view of the world helps explain why they can believe in the outrageous lies put forward by right-wingers, and passed on by Fox News. These are the people who accept bumper sticker solutions to the nation's and the world's problems.

Smarter people know that is simply not the case. We live in a world composed of many shades of gray -- and many times the things we hear about are neither completely true or completely false. And the solutions to problems are most of the time far too complex to be put on a bumper sticker. The people who know that prefer to get their news from PBS or MSBNC.

Cable News Coverage Of The Choice Debate

The charts are from Media Matters for America. They did a report on how the cable news networks covered the pro and anti-choice debate (abortion) between January 1st of 2015 and March 6th of 2016. It turns out that the three (CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC) are very different in their coverage.

Fox contained overwhelmingly anti-choice stories in that time period, while MSNBC contained mostly pro-choice stories. Anti-choice stories outnumbered pro-choice stories on CNN, but not by a whole lot. They were somewhere in the middle between Fox and MSNBC.

All three aired at least some misinformation on the topic, but CNN and MSNBC didn't broadcast anywhere near the misinformation aired on Fox. That's because Fox isn't really interested in truth. They were created to be, and remain purely a propaganda arm of the Republican Party (and right-wing politics).

But it's the third chart that bothered me the most -- the chart showing the gender of those the networks have invited on to speak about abortion. It seems to me that the issue of what a woman has the right to do with her own body should be a matter for that woman (or women in general).

Men have always had the right to control their own bodies in a free country, and have assumed they also had the right to control a woman's body. That is wrong, and it is against the precepts of any free country. Women should have every single right that any man has, and in equal portion. Anything less is, in my opinion, unconstitutional.

And it is also wrong to have mostly men discussing a women's issue on the cable news networks. It's time for those networks to do the right thing.

Are The Cable News Networks Telling You The Truth ?

Are the cable news networks telling you the truth. That's a valid question, because they are supposed to be doing exactly that. Unfortunately, none of them do it all the time. Their greatest failing is in letting the pundits they have on say anything they want -- and they don't challenge them when they tell obvious lies.

The chart above is from PunditFact (last updated in January). It shows how many pundit statements, statements that go unchallenged, on the three cable news networks are true or false. Sadly, none of the three do an exceptional jobs of delivering the truth to their viewers.

CNN does the best job -- with 53% truth and 26% false statements. On MSNBC, the ration is 34% to 41% -- and on Fox, the ratio is 22% to 58%. If you count the Half-truths as falsehoods (which they really are), then the false statements climb to -- CNN (47%), MSNBC (65%), and Fox (77%). That's abysmal.

How are we supposed to sustain a democracy when the purveyors of news allow so many false statements?

The Democratic "Forum" Was Better Than Any Debate

On Friday night, MSNBC hosted a "Democratic Forum". It was not a debate, and the candidates did not appear on stage together. Instead, moderator Rachel Maddow did about a 30 minute interview with each of the three Democratic candidates -- Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton.

Maddox did an excellent job. She asked good questions, tough questions, and even some fun questions -- and she gave the candidates the time to fully explain their answers and let them make the case for their candidacy. I think this sealed Maddow's reputation as the best of the talking heads on cable TV news.

So, how did the three candidates do? They all did well. And I like all three of the Democratic candidates. I still support Hillary Clinton for president, but after the forum was over, I am convinced that any of these three Democrats would makes a 1000 times better president than any of the Republicans seeking their nomination.

Thank you MSNBC! I have been critical of political coverage in the mainstream media this year, but this show was very good -- and shows the rest of the media how political coverage should be done.

(NOTE -- the picture above of Rachel Maddow is from hollywoodlife.com.)

Fox News Is The Most Untrustworthy Cable News Network

Pundit Fact (by the Tampa Bay Times) checks the accuracy of statements and claims by the "talking heads" and pundits that appear on the three cable news networks (candidates and government officials are excluded). The then research those claims and rate them as to their truthfulness. Here is their rating system:

TRUE – The statement is accurate and there’s nothing significant missing.
MOSTLY TRUE – The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information.
HALF TRUE – The statement is partially accurate but leaves out important details or takes things out of context.
MOSTLY FALSE – The statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression.
FALSE – The statement is not accurate.
PANTS ON FIRE – The statement is not accurate and makes a ridiculous claim.
The chart below shows the latest findings of the networks throughout this summer. Once again, Fox News leads all three networks in the false claims they allow, and are last in the claims that were true. CNN has the most true claims and the least false one. MSNBC falls in the middle.

But while Fox News is the worst, none of the three networks are as good as they should be in telling the truth, and in confronting false claims.

25% Of Public Relies On The Network Telling The Most Lies

Politifact.com has updated their information regarding how truthful the pundits featured on the cable news networks were. Their latest figures are for the month of September of 2014. They examined the claims made by each networks pundits, and rated them as true, mostly true, half true, mostly false, false, and pants on fire (outrageously false). Their results are shown in the chart above.

It seems that nothing much has changed. Fox News is still the network featuring the pundits that tell the truth the least and tell falsehoods the most. CNN is the most reliable network when it comes to telling the truth and telling the fewest falsehoods -- and MSNBC falls between Fox and CNN. This explains why Fox viewers are the least informed viewers on the facts (as has been shown by several studies).

That would be bad enough, but a survey done last April by the Public Religion Research Institute of 1,538 adults in the U.S. shows an even more troubling fact. That survey shows that a shocking 25% of all Americans trust Fox News to give them accurate facts (the highest percentage of any news organization).

That's right. Fully one-quarter of the population trusts the network that lies the most to give them accurate information (see chart below).

Are You Getting The Truth From Cable News Channels ?

Earlier this year, a PublicMind Survey from Fairleigh Dickinson University found some disturbing facts about the cable news channels. They asked those who got all their news from one of the three cable news channels (Fox, CNN, MSNBC) some domestic and international news questions -- and then compared the results to those who watched no news programs at all (and to those who got their news from NPR or The Daily Show). The results were not good.

MSNBC viewers scored equally with those who watched no news show regularly, while CNN did a bit better than the no news people. But both paled in comparison to those who got all their news from a comedy show (The Daily Show) -- the the people who scored the highest were those who got their news from NPR (the public channel).

But all of them did much better than Fox News did. Fox viewers did worse than those who watched no news at all -- both on domestic and international questions. That's pretty bad, and tells us that Fox viewers may actually be getting misinformation rather than news from their favorite channel. And a new survey, done by PunditFact (a division of politifact.com), shows that is exactly what is happening. After viewing "hundreds of hours of videos" they came up with the numbers in the chart below.

Basically, they found that none of the cable news networks can be fully trusted to tell the truth all of the time. CNN did the best at 60% of the time, and MSNBC came in at a pathetic 31% of the time -- but even MSNBC's numbers were a lot better than those of Fox News. Fox told all or most of the truth only 18% of the time, and were found to be telling ridiculous falsehoods (lying) a whopping 60% of the time. It just shows that Fox viewers do poorly on current events tests because they just don't get the truth from their favorite news channel. Instead, they get what they want to hear (coupled with what corporate America wants them to hear).

The tendency at this point might be to vilify Fox News for their outrageous failure to tell the truth, and give CNN a pat on the back for telling the truth a significant percentage of the time. In my opinion though, none of the three cable networks are doing as well as they should be doing. Shouldn't all of them be reporting the truth 100% of the time? Of course they should.

So why aren't they doing it? The obvious answer is that they are all owned by giant corporations, and they can only report what those corporations want reported. CNN was able to sneak some truth through about 60% of the time, and that's pretty remarkable -- but it's not good enough. And Fox News doesn't even try -- they give you the truth about 18% of the time (and you can bet that small bit of truth is the truth that their corporate masters don't mind seeing reported).

Why does NPR (PBS) do so much better? because they are a public network rather than a corporate owned network. If they shade the truth, they will have to answer to either the left or the right (and maybe even those in the middle), and they have no reason to report only what the corporations want reported.

We don't get much real news these days (and even less truth). We get what the giant corporations want us to hear or see -- and that's because almost all of the mainstream media in this country is owned by about six giant corporations (who don't want you to know about or think about anything that might tend to reduce their outrageous profits). I wish it wasn't true, but that's just the sad state of the media in the United States at this time.

Public Still Prefers Broadcast News To Cable News

The Pew Research Center has released its yearly look at the State of the News Media. It's a fairly comprehensive look at all different types of news media -- TV, radio, digital, and print media. It's an interesting read, and I recommend you go to their site and read the whole thing if this kind of thing interests you.

One of the things I found most interesting is contained in the above chart -- the primetime numbers for the major national TV news outlets. The cable news outlets would like for people to believe they are making significant inroads into the three broadcast networks, but that is just wishful thinking. The truth is that when it comes to getting news in the nightly primetime, the American public still trusts the broadcast channels over the cable channels (including Fox) -- and the numbers are not even close.

Corporate Media Is Still Lying To Us About Social Security

You may think my title for this post is an exaggeration, but it's not. When is the last time you have heard on any of the major (corporate-owned) news networks that Social Security works, is not going "bankrupt", and could be easily fixed with cutting benefits or raising the retirement age? I would be very surprised if you could remember any instance at all of that reporting, and yet it is the truth about Social Security.

The latest bout of lying about Social Security comes from a network generally regarded as being friendly to progressive ideas -- MSNBC. But while MSNBC does have some progressive hosts (Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, etc), it is also corporate-owned and that mega-corporation makes sure its own views get aired. And the latest water-carrier for the corporations is Abigail "Abby" Huntsman, who was born into great wealth as the daughter of rich Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman.

Huntsman is the co-host of The Cycle on MSNBC, and since she will never have to depend on Social Security for her own existence in her old age, she finds it easy to attack Social Security -- which she did last week, telling the same old corporate and Republican lies about the program (which they have always opposed).

Talking to young people, and attempting to scare them into helping to destroy the program many of them will have to depend on in their old age, she passed on several outright lies -- that people live 20 years longer than they did when Social Security was established, that this would exacerbate the problems of Social Security which is already going bankrupt, and that there are only two solutions to solving Social Security's problems (cutting benefits and raising the retirement age).

Huntsman's pronouncement that people now live 20 years longer makes it sound like people will be getting Social Security for an additional 20 years now -- and that is just not true. That increase in a person birth to death life span is mainly due to a big decrease in the infant mortality rate (and since fewer infant deaths are averaged into the life span, it increases the life span overall). But that has nothing to do with the number of years people are getting Social Security. The number of years a social security recipient is expected to live has not grown nearly as much as she implies -- but has only increased from 77 to 83 for males, and from 78 to 85 for females (far less than 20 years).

Obviously, that does not make a serious difference in the survival of Social Security, especially since the creators expect this increase and have accounted for it. The second lie is one that Republicans have been saying for years -- that the program is going bankrupt. She even made the statement that nothing would be left when people her age retired (she is 27). That is not just a misrepresentation of facts (as the people are living longer argument was) -- it is an outrageous and outright LIE.

Social Security is not going bankrupt (broke), and can't do that since as long as people work in this country there will be money flowing into the program. The fact is that Social Security can pay out full benefits for at least another twenty years, and after that could continue to pay out 70%-80% of full benefits -- and that's if nothing at all is done. Obviously some minor adjustments need to be made since we would like for the program to pay 100% benefits far into the future -- but that is a long way from a program going "broke" or "bankrupt".

But the most outrageous lie of all was her assertion that there are only two things that could "fix" Social Security -- either cut the benefits going to recipients or raise the age at which a person qualifies for benefits (or both). She conveniently overlooks the easiest and best fix for Social Security (and one that would not affect poor and middle class workers at all) -- raising or eliminating the cap of the amount of income subject to FICA taxes.

Currently employees pay a "payroll" (FICA) tax of about 6.2%, and their employer pays an equal amount. But there is a cap on the amount of money taxed. This means while the poor and middle class workers pay the full 6.2% on the money they earn, those making a lot more are only taxed on a small portion of their income -- the first $113,700 of their income, and everything they make over that is tax-free. For instance, someone making less than $113,700 a year would pay 6.2% of their salary into the Social Security Trust Fund, while someone making $1,000,000 a year would pay only 0.007% of their salary or income into the SSTF.

In other words, the rich are basically getting a free ride as far as FICA taxes are concerned. Does it seem fair to you that a minimum wage worker, who already is working for a poverty-level wage, will pay 6.2% of his/her income in FICA taxes while someone making a million dollars a year pays only 0.007%? Raising the income cap, or eliminating it altogether, would fully fund Social Security far into the future -- and it would doing it without hurting Americans who are already struggling to get by.

I can understand why Huntsman doesn't mind hurting or destroying Social Security. She'll never need it to survive. But millions of other Americans do need it to survive, and millions more will need it in the future. These are the people that would be seriously hurt by raising the retirement age or by cutting benefits (with the current average benefit being only slightly above $1000 a month). It is inexcusable to even consider either of these "fixes", since that would just hurt millions of our society's most vulnerable people.

Why won't the major media outlets tell the truth about Social Security? Greed. They are all owned by giant corporations -- corporations that don't want to pay more in FICA taxes for their CEO's and other management. And those corporations are owned and operated by rich people -- who also don't want to pay their fair share in FICA taxes. They would rather hurt those who depend on Social Security to exist than pay the same tax rate that a minimum wage worker pays.

That's shameful, but it's true. Instead of fulfilling their traditional mission to tell the truth, the corporate-owned media now just parrots the policies favored by the rich and the corporations.

Fox News Struggling Since The Election

For quite a while now, the news team at the NBC News cable channel (formerly called MSNBC) has finished a poor second to the talking heads at Fox News. But a surprising thing has happened since the election. According to the Nielsen ratings for November 7th through November 16th, NBC's cable channel has logged 8% more viewers than Fox news in the 24 to 54 demographic (the most coveted age group for advertisers). In addition, News Corpse says:

Particularly impressive were the results of the two powerhouse programs on the MSNBC lineup: Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. Maddow won seven of the eight days against her Fox competition, Sean Hannity. For the 8-day run Maddow beat Hannity by 18% and her 544k average was second to only Bill O’Reilly in all of cable news. O’Donnell won all eight days against Fox’s Greta Van Susteren. His margin of victory over Van Susteren was 17% for the eight days.

This can no longer be considered a temporary blip on the ratings scales. With two weeks having elapsed, the MSNBC programs are showing steady strength against competition that was once thought insurmountable. Only Bill O’Reilly is holding his top position for Fox in primetime. This may indicate that Sean Hannity is wearing thin with viewers who are likely disappointed with his overly confident (and harebrained) assurances that all the polls were wrong and that Mitt Romney would emerge victorious.

Hannity is perhaps the most stridently partisan host on the Fox News network and frequently augments his analysis with that of the pundit world’s most notorious nutcase, Dick Morris. As for Van Susteren, she never had the cult-like following of her Fox comrades, but she has been closely associated with her good friend (and client of her husband), Sarah Palin. That association may also have become a drag on the ratings of her show.

Those are encouraging numbers. At least for the last couple of weeks, people seem more interested in getting real facts instead of the steady diet of lies being put out by Fox News. The real question now is whether NBC can sustain this. I hope they can, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Fox News - A Chicken Or Egg Conundrum

There have been studies before showing Fox News viewers are the least informed viewers of any news network. Consider this bit from a post in The Nation:

As of November 22, 2011, Think Progress had found seven studies showing Fox News’s viewers to be the worst informed of all news consumers. In a post about a report that had just come out in the International Journal of Press/Politics, by communication scholar Lauren Feldman of American University and colleagues which found that “Fox News viewing manifests a significant, negative association with global warming acceptance,” Chris Mooney cited six previous studies with similar findings.
I identified 6 separate studies showing Fox News viewers to be the most misinformed, and in a right wing direction—studies on global warming, health care, health care a second time, the Ground Zero mosque, the Iraq war, and the 2010 election.
I also asked if anyone was aware of any counterevidence, and none was forthcoming. There might very well be a survey out there showing that Fox viewers aren’t [emphasis in original] the most misinformed cable news consumers on some topic (presumably it would be a topic where Democrats have some sort of ideological blind spot), but I haven’t seen it. And I have looked.

Now there is another study about this. Researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Public Mind Poll conducted a very interesting survey. They asked the viewers of certain news sources (Fox, MSNBC, CNN, Sunday Show, talk radio, Daily Show, and NPR) a short series of questions, divided into domestic and international issues. They also had a control group who did not watch (or listen to) any news source. The results (as an average score) is shown in the two charts above.

And the results don't look good for Fox News. Viewers who got most of their news from Fox did much worse than any other group -- scoring 1.04 on the domestic test and 1.08 on the international test. That is significantly lower than the group that watched no news shows. The "no news" group scored 1.22 on the domestic test and 1.28 on the international test. All of the people who watched (or listened to) the other news sources scored higher than the "no news" group (except for MSNBC, which scored slightly lower on the international test -- but still significantly higher than the Fox News group).

Of course, this brings up a sort of "chicken or egg" question. Do the dumbest people in America watch Fox News, or does Fox News make the people that watch them dumber? I suspect it may be a combination of both. Anyone who thinks they will get real news from watching Fox can't be too bright, and Fox is much more interested in spreading right-wing propaganda than reporting real news.

The news source whose listeners scored the highest on both tests was no surprise. It was NPR (National Public Radio), perhaps the most accurate and highly regarded news source in the nation. MSNBC, CNN, and talk radio should all be ashamed of themselves (even though they did finish much better than Fox News). All of them were beaten by the viewers of The Daily Show (a comedy show) on both tests.

Cable Coverage Of Racist Shooting

The above graphic (from Think Progress) shows how many segments the three main cable news networks have devoted to covering the racist shooting of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin. Does it surprise anyone that Fox News is ignoring the story? I suspect that are afraid of angering their racist base of viewers.
