"Oh. I didn't know you were a female."
That was the response one of my drivers got from a guy who had followed her halfway across town after she had the audacity to honk at him when he wouldn't go on green. After she honked, he flipped her off and pulled a u-turn, tailgating her all the way to her destination, honking at her the whole time.
Scared out of her wits, she called the manager on duty from her cell phone letting him know about her newly acquired stalker. He called the customer she was about to deliver to asking them to call the police if she had any company when she arrived. He also called another driver in the area and arranged for him to meet her there.
When she got to her destination the customer was waiting outside for her, phone in hand. When my driver jumped out of her car, the guy jumped out of his. She held up her cell phone (911 already dialed, just waiting for the send button to be hit) and yelled, "Alright, dude, we can do this one of two ways. You can get in your car and leave, or I can call the police."
To which our lovely customer added, "I'm calling them right now! You leave that girl alone!"
Before shoving his tail between his legs and getting back in the car, he mumbled that little sentence written at the top of this post, which only served to offend her more.
"Why should it matter what I have between my legs?" she wondered later. "Nobody would have been in the wrong to honk...the fucking light was green, and had been so for quite awhile! Does he feel that men shouldn't be allowed to honk?"
This isn't the first time that our drivers have had scary experiences on the road. Usually, it happens to our female drivers when some jackass decides he likes how she looks, and feels he must talk to her NOW. When that happens, we have her lead him back to the store, where the men are waiting outside to explain to the fucker what he is doing wrong. It usually ends in apologies and handshakes.
I agree with my driver about this guy though. He was scary in the fact that he felt the need to intimidate her over such stupid bullshit, but what is even scarier is that he felt that his actions would have been justified had she been male. What would he have done if she were male? Or if she didn't have her cell phone and a pissed off customer awaiting her? Would her sex have mattered if she hadn't planned back-up? Or is uncalled for confrontation only warranted if both parties are male?
If this asshole is going to be offended every time someone honks at him in Texas, he needs to realize that not everyone is a pushover. If he doesn't wake up to this soon he'll find himself a victim of road rage, and as my driver can attest, that is no fun position to be in.
