Kinky Friedman visited the Texas Motor Speedway friday as the guest of Robert Richardson, owner of R3 Racing, and his son Robbie, a NASCAR Busch Series driver. This weekend, Robbie will be driving a Monte Carlo [#80] decked out with Kinky's pink and black campaign logo.
Kinky admitted that he was worried that the NASCAR fans might not know him, or even worse, he feared they might all be Perry supporters. But he need not have worried. The NASCAR fans at TMS treated Kinky like a conquering hero.
After lunching with the Richardson's, Kinky was taken on a tour of the infield -- and mobbed by fans wanting to meet him. Robbie Richardson said there were so many fans it looked like an appearance by "Dale, Jr.".
Robert Richardson said, "The people of NASCAR are Kinky Friedman's fans. This weekend, there will be 300,000 screaming, red-necked, blue-blooded, love-it-or-leave-it constituents of Kinky Friedman here. And we're honored he's agreed to be our sponsor."
Listening to the cheers of the NASCAR fans, Kinky's spirit had to be lifted. Kinky said, "It's mind-blowing. I can see how it's such a popular sport. Everybody's friendly as hell. This is my base. That might be the story: 'Three days before the election, candidate finds base.' It makes me think if we don't win this thing, we should have."
