This is no real surprise. It seems that Clinton's supporters have a more positive view of this country than Trump's supporters. About 59% of Clinton supporters say this country is in better shape than it was 50 years ago, while only 11% of Trump's supporters say that -- a 48 point difference.
About 81% of Trump supporters say this country is in worse shape than it was 50 years ago, while only 19% of Clinton supporters believe that. In short, Clinton is the candidate of optimists while Trump is the candidate of pessimists.
The same holds true for the prospects of the next generation (see bottom chart), although by smaller margins. About 38% of Clinton supporters say things will be better for the next generation. Only 11% of Trump supporters believe that.
These charts were made from a new Pew Research Center survey -- done between August 9th and 16th of a random national sample of 2,010 adults, with a 2.5 point margin of error (including 680 Clinton supporters with an moe of 4.3 points, and 581 Trump supporters with an moe of 4.6 points).
