The Republicans in Congress have passed their new "tax reform", and Donald Trump has signed it into law. But neither has been able to convince the American public that the plan is good for everyone (or even for just the middle class).
Only 24% think the plan will give tax cuts to all Americans, while 50% say most Americans will pay the same or more in taxes under the Republican plan. But most (55%) think the wealthy will see large decreases in their taxes -- and counter to what he is claiming, most (53%) believe Donald Trump will also see a large decrease in his taxes thanks to the new GOP tax law.
The public remains convinced the plan is mainly for the rich (and of course, the corporations) -- the entities that fund Republican campaigns. And they are right. The plan is little more than a massive redistribution of income and wealth from most Americans to the rich.
The public also still wants to see Trump's tax returns (see bottom chart). Twice as many think he should release his tax returns as think he shouldn't.
The charts above reflect information in a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between December 17th and 19th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,291 registered voters), with a 3.1 point margin of error.
The chart below is from a recent Public Policy Polling survey -- done on December 11th and 12th of a random national sample of 862 registered voters, with a 3.3 point margin of error.
