Zombie Day

(The image above was found on the pages of Godless Liberals.)

It's Zombie Day again -- the day that millions of supposedly rational people put logic aside and celebrate the rising from the dead of their favorite religious zombie. And according to their Bible (a book many say cannot be in error), Jesus wasn't the only zombie that rose from the dead at that time. According to the book of Matthew:

Matthew 27:51  -  And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Matthew 27:52  -  And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Matthew 27:53  -  And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

That sounds like a pretty extraordinary event -- an event that would be eagerly recorded and reported by historians. How is it, I wonder, that none of them seem to have been aware of this momentous event? Could it be that it didn't really happen? Could it be that the Bible, like other religious books, is merely a book of myths written by leaders to subjugate and control the masses -- and is still used in that way?

Thoughts On Easter

We're at that time of year when the christians celebrate their hero rising from his grave. I have to agree with the cartoon above from The Atheist Pig. But one thing that puzzles me is why christians only celebrate a part of this story. There was a lot more going on that day than just one person rising from his grave. Here is how I put it in a post last year:

It's that time of the year again, when christians celebrate their hero, Jesus, who was supposed to have risen from the grave on this day. But Jesus wasn't the only member of the walking dead to rise and walk the streets of Jerusalem that day. If you are one of those who believe every word of the Bible is literally true, then you know this already. There were many (dozens? hundreds? more?) who broke free from their graves and appeared to people like Jesus did. Here's how this frightening event is described in Matthew 27:

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

Isn't it amazing though that such an earth-shattering event wasn't reported by anyone except the writer of Matthew? Wouldn't one have thought that such a one-of-a-kind never-before-happened thing like the dead rising and appearing to the living would be considered a newsworthy happening -- worthy of at least a mention? I think the unexpected appearance of a horde of zombies would cause quite a panic these days.

CDC Prepares America For "Zombie Apocalypse"

Thank goodness someone working for the government has a sense of humor. I just didn't think that person would be working at the Center for Disease Control (CDC). One of the jobs of the CDC is to prepare the American people for an emergency -- so they will know what to do if and when an emergency strikes. One clever person at the CDC (Ali S. Khan) has come up with a way to draw interest to this topic in a unique way. He has written an account of how to prepare for a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE (with the knowledge that this same preparedness could be used in any kind of disaster).

I urge you to go over to the CDC site and read the whole thing. I'm only posting a part of it here, but it's good information that we all should be aware of -- and it's a pretty funny article to boot. Here's some of what he had to say:

There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.

The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder “How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?”

Well, we’re here to answer that question for you, and hopefully share a few tips about preparing for real emergencies too!

So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored).

If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It’s likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas (I will be volunteering the young nameless disease detectives for the field work).

$70 Movie Causes Stir At Cannes

These days the making of a new movie is a multi-million dollar affair. Even an independent film by a new director that's made on a shoestring budget, will cost a couple of hundred thousand dollars. So you can imagine the shock caused by the new movie "Colin". The movie was made for $70.

The movie's director is Marc Price (pictured). Price, and a few of his friends, have wanted to make a movie, but realized they would never be able to raise the couple of hundred thousand dollars needed to do it. Price said, "A couple of friends were round a few years ago watching Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead'. And we were lamenting the fact that we could never make a zombie film -- we wouldn't be able to acquire a budget."
"Then I just woke up before everyone else -- I was probably a bit hungover -- and I wondered if a zombie movie from a zombie's perspective had been done before." That's when he decided to make a no-budget movie.
Price advertised for volunteer zombies on Facebook and MySpace, borrowed make-up from studio films and taught himself how to do special effects. They were able to get "50 brilliantly made up zombies" from volunteers. It took 18 months to shoot and edit the film.
So, what was the $70 spent on? Price said, "We bought a crowbar and a couple of tapes, and I think we got some tea and coffee as well -- not the expensive stuff either, the very basic kind. Just to keep the zombies happy."

The film is causing quite a stir at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The Japanese are already in negotiations for distribution rights, and several American companies are interested in the film. Price is hoping the film makes enough money to finance a new film.

He said, "Hopefully we'll be able to generate some interest and maybe try to get some kind of a budget for our next film -- maybe a bigger budget, £100, I don't know."

Zombies Invade Austin !

I used to think I wanted to live in Austin, but not anymore. It seems the capitol city of Texas has been invaded by an evil horde of undead Zombies! This awful truth was verified to horrified citizens last Wednesday morning.

Fortunately, a couple of unknown heroes were able to break the padlock on some highway department signs, and hack into the signs' computer to warn the unsuspecting citizens of Austin. It is believed that the warning on the signs allowed innocent motorists and others to take evasive action, and luckily, it seems that no one was hurt.

Rumor has it that the Zombie horde is led by the supremely evil undead monster called "39%" and his imbecilic sidekick "Dewie". We can only pray that the good citizens of Austin can protect themselves until the Zombies are driven from their city. Some believe it could take until 2010 to rid the city of this evil.
