The Labor Dapertment's unemployment report for August was released a few days ago. It showed the economy had produced about 162,000 new jobs - a big improvement over last month. There was also 115,000 newly unemployed person, so the unemployment remained at 4.1% (for the second month in a row).

The Unemployment Rate Fell To 4.1% In July Even Though The Economy Lost Jobs

The Labor Department released its monthly unemployment report on Friday. It showed the unemployment rate fell by 0.1% in July to 4.1%. But that is not a cause for celebration. The economy actually lost 23,000 jobs during the month. The only reason the unemployment rate fell was because the civilian work force also shrunk - by about 264,000.

Unemployment Went Down To 4.2% In June (In Spite Of Poor Job Creation)

Because of the holiday this weekend, the Labor Department released the June unemployment report a day early. The report showed the economy produced an anemic 57,000 jobs in June. That was not good, but the unemployed rate dropped from 4.3% to 4.2% anyway - mainly because the civilian workforce had 720,000 fewer workers (also not good).

The Labor Department released its unemployment report for February on Friday. It was not good news. Instead of the economy adding jobs, it actually lost about 92,000 jobs in February. That raised the unemployment rate to 4.4% for the month.

The Labor Department released its unemployment report for January on February 11th (blaming the delay on the government shutdown). It showed the economy produced about 130,000 new jobs. That's better than the last few months, but still short of what is expected in a healthy economy. It was good enough though to reduce the unemployment rate to 4.3% for the month.

With Poor Job Growth The November Unemployment Rate Rises To 4.6%

The Trump administration did not issue a Labor Department report for October (using the shutdown as an excuse to avoid it). But the November report was released a week late on Tuesday, and it was not a good one. The economy produced only about 64,000 new jobs (far below what a good economy produces), and the unemployment rate rose by 0.2% over September to a high of 4.6% (the highest rate in nearly four years).

In the week ending September 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 218,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 231,000 to 232,000. The 4-week moving average was 237,500, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 240,000 to 240,250.

This is the highest level for initial claims since October 23, 2021 when it was 268,000. The previous week's level was revised down by 1,000 from 237,000 to 236,000. The 4-week moving average was 240,500, an increase of 9,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 250 from 231,000 to 230,750. 

Trump Doesn't Think Domestic Violence Is A Crime

This may be one of the stupidest things Donald Trump has ever said. He thinks domestic violence shouldn't be a crime. He wants us to think including domestic violence in crime statistics is just a Democratic hoax designed to keep him from achieving his goal of zero crime in Washington, D.C. after taking over the police there and sending in the National Guard.

I understand why he is saying that. Domestic violence cannot be controlled by flooding the streets with soldiers. It happens within a home, and usually involves family members or significant others.

But when police are called to quell a domestic disturbance, it usually involves a crime - a violent crime. Someone has been assaulted - maybe even seriously hurt or killed.

Consider the following facts (from new-hope.org):

* One in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. The same number (one in four) of GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender) individuals also experience domestic violence.

* Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.

* Every 9 seconds in the U.S. a woman is assaulted or beaten.

* Every year, 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is murdered by her current or former partner.

Domestic violence is not just a crime. It is a plague in this country.And Trump's downplaying of it does a disservice to its innocent victims.
