I know it upsets the right-wingers in this country to hear the word "fascism" (unless they are the ones tossing it around), but really, is there a single one of the above
elements of fascism that the current Republican Party is not guilty of? Ever since the teabaggers and evangelicals took over that party, they have been running straight toward establishing an American fascist state (although they prefer not to call it that). But not using the word "fascism" doesn't mean you aren't a fascist.
Sounds more like every communist state there has ever been!
ReplyDeleteNo David -- It fits the Republicans much better. While many of the above would fit the communist regimes, there are two glaring exceptions -- the protection of corporate power, and the mixing of religion and government (as the communists would not do either).
ReplyDeleteWell, Ted, absorbing corporate power into government power does not remove the power it simply changes the ownership, as any ex-Soviet citizen will attest.
ReplyDeleteAs for religion, given that huge numbers of people freely choose to believe in one of the many on offer it is surely the business of politicians, representing the people, to protect their right to believe and practice - and that is politics!
While I might agree that a dictatorial government owning production and the corporations owning government are both bad -- in that they both cut the people out of controlling their own lives -- it is still a mistake to say the two things are the same.
ReplyDeleteAnd we are not talking about politicians protecting the "right to believe", but the mixing of religion with government that imposes religion (or the beliefs of a particular religion) on those who don't want it.
